Best Ball Analyzing Opportunity Cost: How to Evaluate the Picks You Pass on in Best Ball
Why opportunity cost is the most underused concept in best ball draft analysis: most managers evaluate each pick by asking “is this player worth drafting at this point in the draft?” — an absolute value question; the better question is “is this player worth more than every other player I could take right now?” — a relative value question; the relative comparison (opportunity cost) reveals which picks are actually generating roster value and which are merely avoiding immediate regret.
Analyzing Opportunity Cost in Best Ball
The opportunity cost framework:
The structure: (1) the opportunity cost of any pick is the expected production lost by not taking the next-best available player; if you take WR Smith (projected 150 PPR points) when WR Jones (projected 165 PPR points) was also available, the opportunity cost of taking Smith was 15 PPR points across the season; (2) in best ball, the opportunity cost calculation is complicated by roster construction — you cannot evaluate each pick’s opportunity cost purely by the next-best player at that specific position; the tradeoff is often between positions (taking a WR in round 4 versus the TE or QB who was available); (3) the best ball roster slot opportunity cost: the opportunity cost of taking a 5th WR instead of a 2nd TE depends on how the best-ball scoring system will use both players; if your 5th WR will produce 120 PPR points but only add 10 points over your projected 4th WR (who was going to hold the flex otherwise), the marginal opportunity cost of taking the 5th WR is 10 points against the TE who may have added 40 points over your projected TE backup; (4) the tier-break opportunity cost: opportunity cost becomes most expensive when you cross a tier break; drafting the last player in Tier 2 instead of the first player in Tier 3 may have low opportunity cost (the next pick is almost as good); drafting the first player in Tier 3 instead of continuing to wait is a separate opportunity cost decision.
How to apply opportunity cost analysis in the draft:
The practice: (1) before each pick, identify the top-3 alternatives available; estimate their production relative to the player you intend to take; if the player you intend to take is clearly better than all alternatives, draft them; if the alternatives include players who project meaningfully higher, reconsider; (2) track the round’s production floor — as the draft progresses, the production available at each position decreases; the opportunity cost of waiting for your preferred player increases as better players are drafted around you; (3) the skip-and-wait calculation: if you skip a position for one round to take a position you believe is about to “run” (multiple managers about to draft there), you may avoid losing the best players at that position to competitors; this is a positive opportunity cost trade-off (giving up round-N value now to preserve round-N+1 opportunity); (4) connect opportunity cost analysis to research tools — accurate projection models are essential for opportunity cost calculation; without reliable production estimates, you cannot calculate which player generates the higher expected value.
The common opportunity cost errors:
The mistakes: (1) over-weighting the pick in hand: managers often value the certainty of the player in front of them over the projected value of alternative picks; this “bird in hand” bias causes under-weighting of alternative value; (2) ignoring positional depth curves: the opportunity cost of taking WR over TE at round 7 depends entirely on how quickly TE production degrades after round 7; if the next 3 TEs projected below the available TE are poor, the opportunity cost of passing on the TE is very high; (3) treating all positions identically: WR depth extends much further down the position list than TE or QB; the opportunity cost of passing on a WR in round 5 is lower than the opportunity cost of passing on a TE in round 5 because the next available WR of similar quality exists; the next similar TE may not; (4) pair opportunity cost with draft day mistakes analysis — the most common best ball mistakes are often opportunity cost errors: paying too much for an RB in a PPR format (high opportunity cost relative to the WR who was available) or skipping the second QB in superflex.
