Without in-season pickups, a roster that stacks too many starters at one position on the same bye week produces a weak lineup that week with no way to repair it. The best ball auto-lineup will start whatever live players it has — if you only have one healthy RB in week 9, it starts him. How to Spread Byes Across the Roster
Track byes by position as you draft, not just overall. The goal is avoiding two or more starters at the same position on the same bye — especially at RB and TE, where you carry fewer bodies and a shared bye creates a genuine gap.
Prioritize bye diversity at shallow positions. Because you draft 3–4 running backs and 2 tight ends, a shared bye at those positions hurts proportionally more than at receiver where your depth absorbs it. Be most careful spreading byes at RB and TE.
Use late rounds to patch gaps. If you notice a week where a position thins out after round 12, a cheap pick whose bye fills that hole is a low-cost way to ensure every week has a viable starter. The practical test: do I have a playable option at every position every week?
Worked Example: Distributed vs. Bunched Byes
Drafter A (distributed byes): RB1 has a week 9 bye. RB2 has a week 11 bye. RB3 has a week 6 bye. Every week, at least two RBs are active. In week 9, RB2 and RB3 start automatically. In week 11, RB1 and RB3 start. No week has a genuine gap.
Drafter B (bunched byes): RB1 has a week 9 bye. RB2 has a week 9 bye. RB3 has a week 9 bye. In week 9, the auto-lineup has one active RB — the thin fourth option drafted in round 14. Week 9 is effectively a loss at the position. No waiver wire. No fix.
Both drafters spent similar picks on running backs. Drafter A’s slight attention to bye diversity during the draft costs nothing in production but eliminates a guaranteed weak week.
Common mistake: sacrificing too much production value to chase perfect bye balance. If two RBs at similar ADP have different byes, take the one with the better bye distribution. But if one is clearly more valuable, take the better player — the production gap usually exceeds what a single bad bye week costs you. Treat bye construction as a tiebreaker, not a primary decision driver.
