Why consistency is less valuable in best ball: in traditional head-to-head fantasy, a WR who scores 12 fantasy points every week is a reliable anchor who you can depend on to produce. In best ball, that same consistent WR competes with boom-ceiling WRs for the automatic lineup optimizer spots each week. If a boom-ceiling WR scores 30 points in a given week, the optimizer selects them over the consistent 12-point WR. But if the boom WR scores 4 points in a bad week, the optimizer simply selects the 12-point consistent WR instead. The boom WR contributes their upside weeks at full value without costing you their bad weeks.

Portfolio construction implications. This asymmetry does not mean drafting purely boom players at every position. The optimizer needs enough players at each position to fill all lineup slots even in weeks when multiple boom players bust simultaneously. A roster with 5 boom-or-bust WRs and no consistent WRs will leave optimizer lineup gaps in weeks when all 5 score below their average. The optimal portfolio combines anchor-ceiling players at key positions with volume-dependent backs and reliable pass catchers who provide floor in bad weeks.
