Roster Construction for Consistent Double-Digit Output

Target share as the floor metric. Players with high target share — 25%+ for WR, 20%+ for TE — are the most reliable double-digit scorers because volume creates floor. Even in weeks without touchdowns, 7–8 catches for 80–90 yards hits double digits in PPR. Rostering 2–3 high-target-share players ensures at least one produces a double-digit week in most scoring periods.

Spread double-digit potential across multiple positions. The most successful best ball rosters have double-digit week potential at multiple positions simultaneously — elite WR production, a workhorse RB, and a high-floor QB all capable of producing 15+ points in the same week. Single-position concentration (5 WRs with boom-bust profiles) creates weeks where multiple high-ceiling players hit single digits simultaneously.


Double-Digit Weeks and Tournament Advancement

Tournament cutoffs require above-average totals. In Underdog Mania and similar large-field best ball tournaments, advancing to prize money rounds requires above-average weekly scores. Teams with one explosive week and many average weeks accumulate fewer season-total points than teams with consistent double-digit production across multiple positions each week. Consistency beats peaks in season-total best ball.

Worked Example: The Ceiling Team That Lost to the Consistent One

Two drafters build best-ball rosters for a large-field tournament. Drafter A chases ceiling: he loads up on boom-bust WRs and RBs — low-floor, high-upside players who post the occasional 25+ point explosion but hit double digits only 15–25% of the time. On paper his roster’s peak weeks look terrifying. But most weeks, several of those low-floor players land in single digits simultaneously, so his optimal lineup — even taking his best scorers — comes in below average. His two or three monster weeks aren’t enough to offset a season of mediocre ones, and he misses the tournament’s advance cutoff on cumulative points despite having the highest ceiling in the field.

Drafter B builds for double-digit weeks. He anchors with high-target-share players who hit 10+ consistently — a couple of true WR1s (25%+ target share, 55–65% double-digit rate), a workhorse RB, a high-floor QB, an established TE1 — and crucially spreads that double-digit potential across positions so that in any given week, several different players are likely to clear 10 regardless of which single offense sputters. He still sprinkles in two or three boom-bust upside plays for the occasional spike, but he doesn’t build the whole roster from them. His weekly optimal lineup reliably posts above-average totals, they compound across 17 weeks, and he advances. Same format, but B understood that best ball rewards the sum of consistent double-digit output, not a highlight reel of a few explosions surrounded by zeros.

Common mistake: building a best-ball roster around boom-bust, low-floor players chasing 25+ point ceiling weeks. Because best ball totals your best scores across the whole season, a roster of high-ceiling/low-floor players — who hit double digits only 15–25% of the time — posts too many below-average weeks (several busting at once) to accumulate enough points, even with a few explosions. Prioritize double-digit consistency instead: draft high-target-share, high-floor producers (WR1s, workhorse RBs, a reliable QB and TE1) and spread that double-digit potential across multiple positions so different players clear 10 each week.
