Why injured players are among the most consistent best ball value opportunities: when a player is recovering from injury, the market (ADP) prices in the uncertainty of whether they will be fully healthy and productive. This uncertainty depression of ADP creates a buy opportunity for the manager who has done the research and has a higher confidence estimate of the player’s return timeline and production potential than the market does. In best ball, the injured player who returns to full production in weeks 4–6 still has 11–14 weeks of production to contribute; drafted at a late-round discount (reflecting the missed early weeks), he may significantly outperform his cost.


Drafting Injured Players in Best Ball

The injury evaluation framework:

The process: (1) identify the injury type and timeline — ACL tears historically have 9–12 month recovery times; Achilles tears have 9–12+ months; MCL/ankle sprains have 4–8 weeks; the injury type gives you a recovery range; (2) check the team’s medical updates and the player’s own statements — team injury reports and post-surgery recovery updates narrow the timeline; a player who is “ahead of schedule” after surgery is a different risk than one who is “progressing as expected”; (3) determine the role they will return to — is the player coming back to a clear starter role, or did their team fill their position while they were out? A WR who was a clear WR1 before injury and returns to a WR1 role is far more valuable than one who was replaced by a developing player; (4) calculate the expected production window — in a 17-week best ball season, a player who returns in week 6 has 12 weeks of production; if he produces like a WR2 for those 12 weeks, his total points may exceed the total of many healthy WR3s who played all 17 weeks.

The ADP discount evaluation:

The opportunity: (1) compare the player’s projected healthy ADP (where they would be drafted if fully healthy) to their current injured ADP; the discount is the opportunity; (2) a player discounted 4–6 rounds due to injury uncertainty, who returns in week 4, will produce at their healthy-ADP rate for 13+ weeks; the 4–6 round discount is often too large; (3) the key variable is whether the team maintained the player’s role while injured — if yes, they return to full opportunity; if the team found an alternative and reduced the role, the ADP discount may be insufficient; (4) weigh the opportunity asymmetry — in best ball, a healthy star goes as expected; an injured star who returns fully healthy AND was drafted at a discount is the best-value pick on the board; the upside of the discount materializing exceeds the downside of missing some early weeks.

The positions with the best injured-player value:
