Best Ball Expected Points: How Expected Points Models Work in Best Ball Fantasy

The most actionable EP insight: a player who scored significantly more actual fantasy points than his expected points total (over his opportunity) is likely to regress downward. A player who scored significantly fewer actual points than his expected total is likely to improve. These divergences represent draft value — the market ADP often lags the underlying expected point signals.

How Expected Points Models Work

Inputs: opportunity data. EP models take the following inputs: target count, air yards, carries, red zone opportunities, and game script. These inputs estimate how many fantasy points a player should have scored based on historical conversion rates for each opportunity type.

Outputs: expected vs actual comparison. The model outputs an expected score. When compared to actual scoring, the difference reveals over-performance (positive luck) or under-performance (negative luck). Both are likely to revert toward the expected number.


Applying EP in Best Ball Drafts

Target underperformers who have high expected points. A WR whose expected points are 200 but who scored only 140 in actual points was unlucky — his touchdowns did not convert from his red zone opportunity, or his catches produced fewer yards than their air yards suggested. His ADP may reflect the 140 actual points, but his true expected value is 200.

Fade overperformers with low expected points. A WR with 230 actual points but only 160 expected points scored above his opportunity — touchdowns converted at an above-average rate, or short catches broke for big yardage. His ADP reflects 230, but he is likely to regress to 160.
