Why volume beats efficiency in best ball drafts. In best ball, the weekly scoring mechanic selects only the highest-scoring player from each position group. This means that in a week where a WR has an elite performance (18 targets, 2 TDs), that performance counts regardless of how the WR performed in the other 16 weeks. A high-volume WR who receives 12–14 targets per game has significantly more opportunities to produce one of those elite single-week performances than a WR who receives 6–8 targets per game with higher per-target efficiency. Over the course of a 17-week season, the high-volume WR will produce more ceiling weeks simply by virtue of having more opportunities to break out.
The diminishing returns of efficiency in best ball. The practical limit of efficiency as a best-ball strategy: a WR who catches 5 of 5 targets for 80 yards and 1 TD in a given week scores approximately 20 points — excellent efficiency, solid best-ball score. A high-volume WR who catches 10 of 14 targets for 110 yards and 1 TD — lower catch rate — scores approximately 28 points. The high-volume WR’s ceiling is higher despite lower efficiency because the raw volume creates more point-scoring opportunities. When both are available at similar draft positions, the high-volume WR is the better best-ball pick.
Stacking High-Volume WRs with Their QB
The volume stacking approach. In best ball, a powerful draft strategy is stacking a high-volume WR with their own QB — so that when the QB plays well and throws for 350-plus yards and 3 TDs, both the QB and the WR capture that shared production. A QB who throws for 400 yards does not distribute those yards equally — the primary WR typically absorbs 30–40% of that total (120–160 yards in this example). When you own both the QB and the primary WR, the best-ball lineup captures the full benefit of the high-passing-volume game week across two roster spots.
