Best Ball Overrated Players: Types of Players Who Are Overrated in Best Ball Fantasy Football

High-floor low-ceiling veterans: experienced redraft managers often reach for veteran players whose proven track record makes them comfortable selections. In best ball, comfort is not the goal — ceiling is. A veteran RB who safely produces 12 fantasy points per week has value in redraft (where that reliable floor starts every week) but less value in best ball where the lineup optimizer only starts the highest-scoring RB. A consistent 12-point week is outperformed by other RBs in the pool frequently, and the veteran contributes to fewer “best” weeks than a boom-or-bust player at the same cost.

Injury-Prone Players at Full ADP

Chronic injury risk. Players who miss multiple games per season due to injury consistently underperform their best ball draft cost. In redraft, an injured player can be added back when healthy. In best ball, an injured player contributes 0 points in their missed weeks — losing those weeks permanently with no recovery mechanism. If an RB misses 5 games per year on average (approximately 30% of their games), those missed games reduce their season total by 30%. Managers drafting injury-prone players at full ADP are not discounting for missing games.


Committee RBs Without Clear Path to Workhorse

RBs in crowded backfields. Running backs on teams with committee backfields — where 3+ RBs share carries — are overvalued in best ball because no single back accumulates enough carries to produce consistent fantasy-relevant totals. In best ball, having 3 committee RBs on the same team means 3 roster spots competing for 15 carries split 4–5 ways. Each back produces 6–8 fantasy points per game on average, which is below most other positions’ average contribution in the same rounds. Managers who draft committee RBs late are fine; paying rounds 8–10 for a committee back is a best ball mistake.


QBs Drafted Too Early

Early QBs in 1-QB best ball. In single-QB best ball formats, the QB position has the flattest production curve — the difference between QB1 and QB10 per game is smaller than the WR or RB equivalent. Managers who draft QBs in rounds 5–8 in 1-QB formats are paying WR2 or RB2 prices for a position where QB12 is only marginally worse than QB1. Waiting until rounds 10–12 for a QB and spending those early rounds on WRs with higher-upside best ball ceilings is standard best ball strategy.
