Best Ball Overtime Scoring: How Overtime Affects Best Ball Fantasy Points
Overtime games are not predictable — you cannot draft specifically for overtime upside. But you can understand that high-pace offenses involved in high-scoring games have a higher probability of overtime, and that targeting players on those teams gives you more scoring plays per season across your best ball roster.
Overtime Scoring Quick Reference
| Overtime scenario | Best ball impact | Draft implication | Mistake to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Any overtime play (rushing, receiving, TD) | Full credit — the automatic lineup optimizer includes all stats from the complete game including overtime | No special action needed — the optimizer already captures overtime stats in whatever week they occur | Worrying about manually accounting for overtime stats in best ball — the platform handles it automatically |
| RB in clock-management overtime | Extra rushing yards as teams try to control the ball and set up scoring drives or field goals | Minor boost for RBs on teams with strong ground games — overtime rushing is a small but real source of extra yardage | Drafting an RB specifically for overtime potential — overtime cannot be reliably predicted; do not distort your board |
| QB and WR in high-scoring overtime | Under current NFL overtime rules (both teams get at least one possession), additional pass plays are possible before a winner is determined | Players on high-scoring, up-tempo offenses have more overtime opportunities on average | Assuming current overtime rules always allow full extra possessions — the rules have changed before; verify current NFL overtime rules each season |
| High-pace offense and overtime probability | Teams that score frequently and play close games have higher overtime probability — more OT opportunities across a season | Target players on high-pace offenses as a secondary factor — this is a marginal edge, not a primary selection criterion | Over-weighting overtime potential — it is a minor tiebreaker at best; a player’s weekly production in regulation is 95%+ of his value |
| Players on dominant teams (10+ point leads late) | Lower overtime probability — dominant teams rarely play close games; opposing teams often concede late | Slight downgrade on overtime upside for players on teams expected to dominate; slight upgrade for players on teams likely to play in close games | Avoiding players on good teams because “they won’t have overtime” — the primary reason to own players on dominant teams remains their regular-game efficiency |
| Bonus points in overtime vs regulation | No difference — the optimizer does not distinguish overtime stats from regulation stats; all points count equally | No adjustment needed in how you evaluate point values — a rushing TD in OT scores the same as one in Q1 | Expecting overtime TDs to count as “bonus” points — they count identically to any other scoring play |
How Overtime Scoring Works in Best Ball
All overtime play counts. In best ball, the lineup optimizer includes all stats from the full game including overtime. A WR who scores a touchdown in overtime gets full credit — the optimizer includes it in whatever week lineup he contributes to.
RBs in overtime. NFL overtime often prioritizes running plays to control the clock and set up field goals or scoring drives. RBs in clock-management situations can accumulate extra rushing yards in overtime.
QBs and WRs in current overtime rules. Under current NFL overtime rules (both teams get at least one possession before sudden death), games can extend through several possessions, benefiting QBs, WRs, and TEs in high-scoring situations.
Overtime and Best Ball Strategy
Prioritize players on high-tempo offenses. Teams that score frequently and play close games have higher overtime probability. Players on those teams have more overtime upside than players on slow-paced or dominant teams that frequently win by large margins.
