Best Ball QB Strategy: How to Draft Quarterbacks in Best Ball Tournaments

In redraft, you want a QB who produces consistently every week. In best ball, you want a QB who has weeks that score in your automatic lineup — and since only your best QB week counts, the ceiling of your QB’s distribution matters more than his floor.

Why Two QBs Are Better Than One in Best Ball

Doubling the chances of a ceiling week. In a 17-game NFL season, most QBs have 4–6 weeks where they score 30+ fantasy points. If you have two QBs, your chances of having a top-QB-score week in your lineup doubles. The weeks where neither QB has a great game, some other skill position player fills the lineup slot.

Bye week protection. Every QB has one bye week. If you only have one QB and he is on a bye, you are starting a QB on zero points — or whoever else you have at the position. Two QBs means coverage through the bye.

QB correlation with your WRs. Drafting a QB who you already have wide receivers stacked with creates positive correlation — when your QB has a great game, your WRs from that same team also have great games. This correlation compounds into higher ceiling weeks.


When to Draft Your QBs

Middle rounds (6–10) for the first QB. In most best ball formats with single-QB scoring, the QB tier is deep enough that you can wait until rounds 6–10 for your first QB. Taking a QB in rounds 1–4 wastes draft capital that could go to scarce WR or RB talent.

Late rounds (11–15) for the second QB. After your first QB, wait until late rounds to draft a second. Look for a QB with favorable late-season matchups, dome home games, or high passing volume from a pass-heavy offense.


The Stack Play

QB + WR from the same team. The most common best ball stack is taking a QB and his WR1 (or both WR1 and WR2) from the same team. When that QB throws for 4 TDs, both the QB and his pass-catchers score big. This correlation creates ceiling outcomes.

Opponent stack. Adding a receiver from the opposing team in a high-total game creates a different kind of correlation — if the game is high-scoring, both offenses benefit. This is a secondary stack that adds game-level correlation.

Worked Example: Two-QB Pairing

You draft one quarterback tied to a strong stack and another quarterback from a different offensive environment with a favorable late-season schedule. That pairing gives the roster two independent paths to a ceiling week. If the stack fires, the first quarterback carries the lineup. If a different game environment spikes, the second quarterback can still count.

The mistake would be taking two quarterbacks whose best weeks depend on the same fragile assumption, such as the same receiver, the same weather-prone late schedule, or the same bye-week gap.

Common mistake: drafting QB2 as an afterthought. The second quarterback is not just a bye-week body; he should add a separate ceiling path that complements the rest of the roster.

QB Pair Construction

The best two-QB builds usually avoid duplication. One passer might be paired with a primary receiver stack, while the second brings rushing upside, dome games, or a different playoff-window profile. That gives the roster more ways to access a week that matters.

If both quarterbacks are low-ceiling pocket passers without strong stacks, the position may be functional but not tournament-winning. If both are fragile upside plays, the roster may have too many dead weeks. Pairing style matters.
