Best Ball QB Timing: When to Draft a Quarterback in Best Ball Fantasy Football

Late QB strategy: the dominant strategic approach in large-field best ball tournaments is waiting until rounds 8–12 to draft the first QB. This strategy is supported by QB depth data showing that the fantasy production gap between a round-8 QB and a round-4 QB is smaller than the gap at WR and RB for the same round differential — meaning the opportunity cost of using a top-8 pick on a QB is higher than the production gained relative to drafting the same QB in round 8–10.

QB Tier Structure and Timing

Tier 1 QBs (high cost, high ceiling). A handful of QBs each season project for elite passing game volume — 700-plus attempts, 35-plus TDs, and rushing upside that extends their ceiling. These players are worth a premium in best ball because their ceiling scores can anchor a roster in any given week with a dominant output. The cost is a round 3–5 draft pick, which represents a meaningful opportunity cost. Managers who draft a Tier 1 QB early typically build their roster around that QB’s passing game partners (stacking), accepting that the QB-centric approach requires the surrounding roster to be strong enough to compete.

Late QB approach (rounds 8–12). The more common best ball tournament approach is drafting 2 QBs in rounds 8–14, selecting from the tier of QBs who each project for 4,000-plus yards and 25-plus TDs but do not carry the extreme ceiling of Tier 1. This approach allocates early picks entirely to WR and RB positions where the production drop-off from round 3 to round 8 is steeper than at QB, then secures 2 capable QBs late. The optimizer plays the better performing of the two QBs each week, giving the roster QB flexibility without the early draft cost.


Two-QB Roster Strategy

Staggering bye weeks. Best ball rosters with 2 QBs benefit from selecting QBs whose teams have different bye weeks — ensuring the roster always has an active QB option in every week of the season. Two QBs on the same bye week leaves the roster QB-empty for one week, which the optimizer resolves by playing another QB from the roster (if available) or producing a 0-point QB week. Draft planning should include a basic bye-week check for the two QBs selected.
