Best Ball Receiver Trees: How Target Share Distribution Affects Best Ball Fantasy Football Value

Receiver tree shapes in the NFL: most NFL teams have one primary WR absorbing 20–30% of passing targets, a second WR absorbing 12–18%, a TE absorbing 10–18%, and the remaining targets distributed among multiple receivers and running backs. The exact distribution varies by offensive scheme, QB preferences, and roster construction. Understanding a team’s typical target distribution helps best ball managers identify which receivers have high floors versus high ceilings.

Concentrated vs. Distributed Trees

Concentrated receiver tree. A team where the WR1 absorbs 30–35% of targets creates one high-floor, high-target player but shallow upside below them. The WR2 on this team may see only 8–12% target share — low enough to create inconsistency even if the team passes frequently. For best ball stacking, the value on concentrated-tree teams is concentrated at the top of the tree — draft the WR1 at their ADP and potentially the TE or QB, but avoid paying for the WR2’s ADP as if they have consistent weekly volume.

Distributed receiver tree. A team where the top three or four receivers each absorb 12–18% of targets creates multiple useful best ball players but none with elite individual ceilings. The value of a distributed-tree team is that injuries and game scripts redistribute targets within the tree rather than collapsing to one player. Stacking two distributed-tree receivers creates two players who are each useful without being elite — a valid best ball approach at the right price.


Finding Receiver Tree Data

Where to look. Target share data is available from Air Yards, Statmuse, and Pro Football Reference. Looking at team target percentage totals for each receiver over the prior season provides the baseline receiver tree shape. Offseason receiver additions or departures that change tree structure (a WR1 departure creating an open target share) are the most impactful data points to update the prior season’s tree.
