Best Ball Roster Construction Philosophy: How to Build a Best Ball Fantasy Football Roster
Best ball roster construction should allocate roster spots where automatic lineup optimization can actually capture spike weeks. In redraft, depth protects against injuries and waiver needs. In best ball, depth is a ceiling engine: every bench player is a chance for the optimizer to catch a big week.

Positional Allocation in Best Ball
WR-heavy construction. The most widely validated best ball roster construction approach is WR-heavy, typically drafting 6–9 WRs on a roster of 18–20 players. The mathematical justification is that WR weekly scoring has the highest variance of any position — a WR can score 0–5 points on a quiet week and 35–45 points on a touchdown-and-explosion week — meaning the lineup optimization benefit from having many WRs is the highest at this position. More WRs in the pool means more chances that one of them has an elite weekly performance that the optimizer captures.
RB allocation. Most experienced best ball managers limit RB allocation to 3–4 RBs rather than the 5–6 RBs a redraft manager might roster. RBs have lower ceiling weeks on average in PPR best ball compared to WRs; depth RBs who rarely score touchdowns provide minimal ceiling value to the optimizer. The exception is drafting RBs with receiving roles (pass-catching backs with consistent target shares) who provide WR-like week-to-week ceiling potential.
Stack Combinations as a Construction Variable
How many stacks should a best ball roster have. Most experienced best ball managers include 1–2 QB-WR stacks on an 18–20 player roster. A stack concentrates ceiling into correlated outcomes: when the QB has a great game, the stacked WR often has a great game simultaneously, providing double upside that non-stacked rosters cannot match. Single-stack rosters have one high-ceiling week scenario; double-stack rosters have two independent high-ceiling scenarios, providing more tournament top-score potential.
Worked Example
Imagine two teams both have 18 roster spots. Team A uses six spots on running backs with similar low-ceiling roles. Team B uses four running backs and adds two extra receivers with plausible spike-week paths. Team A may feel safer, but Team B gives the optimizer more chances to capture a 25-point receiver week.
This does not mean every roster should ignore running back. It means each roster spot should have a job. A late running back should have contingent upside or receiving value. A late receiver should have explosive potential or role-growth upside. A third quarterback should only exist if the structure genuinely needs it.
Common mistake: copying redraft roster balance into best ball. Best ball benches do not need safe backups as much as they need players who can enter the optimal lineup when their spike week arrives.
