Best Ball Roster Construction Principles: The Core Rules of Building Best Ball Fantasy Football Rosters

Principle 1 — draft for ceiling: in best ball, every player competes for optimizer activation, not a guaranteed starting spot. A WR who posts 30 points one week and 3 points the next is more valuable in best ball than a WR who posts 16 points every week, because the optimizer activates the 30-point week and ignores the 3-point week. High-variance players whose upside weeks are exceptional beat out consistent but capped players. Draft with the question “what is this player’s ceiling week?” not “what is their floor?”

Principle 2 — Build Stacks

Stack to concentrate ceiling. The second core principle is building offensive stacks — drafting QB + WR from the same team, or multiple WRs from the same offense. When a passing offense has a big game, multiple players from that offense produce high scores simultaneously. The best ball optimizer can activate all of them in that week, compounding the benefit. A roster with three unrelated WRs from different offenses cannot capture multi-player activation from a single-game explosion. Stacks ensure that when a key offense fires, multiple roster spots benefit.

Stack diversity. The third-order principle within stacking is building multiple stacks or stack options across different offenses — so the roster is not fully dependent on one offense having big games. A roster with one dominant QB stack and no other correlated players is fully exposed to that offense underperforming. Adding a secondary stack or a partial stack from a second offense provides resilience while maintaining the concentration benefit.


Principle 3 — Maximize RB Count

Why best ball needs more RBs. Running backs have the highest injury rate of any skill position and the most dramatic production change when injuries alter roles. In best ball, where every player is locked in at draft time, RB depth is the primary protection against injury-related roster collapse. Most experienced best ball managers roster 5–6 RBs rather than the 3–4 they might carry in redraft, because each additional RB increases the probability that at least one RB has a breakout stretch in the 17-week window.
