Best Ball Running Back Value: How to Value Running Backs in Best Ball Fantasy Football Drafts
Why RBs are different in best ball: in season-long fantasy, a high-floor bell cow RB (20+ carries per game, low ceiling, consistent 15–20 PPR points per week) is extremely valuable because you can set-and-forget them every week. In best ball, that consistency is less valuable because the ceiling weeks — when an RB scores 35+ points — are what add significant value. A 20-point-per-week RB contributes exactly what their consistency predicts; a boom-bust RB who averages 18 points/week but has 5 weeks over 35 points contributes more in best ball than their average suggests.
RB Value Quick Reference
| RB type | Best ball value | ADP range to target | Mistake to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workhorse RB + TD upside (25 carries + goal line role) | High — both volume ceiling and TD ceiling | Rounds 1–4 if truly elite; rounds 5–7 for strong workhorse | Paying rounds 1–2 ADP for a workhorse who gets zero goal-line work — the TDs are what produces ceiling weeks |
| Bell cow with no passing game role (20 carries, 2 targets) | Below average for best ball — floor only, minimal ceiling | Only in rounds 7–9 — not at full season-long ADP | Treating season-long value and best ball value as identical for floor RBs — in best ball, floor is never the goal |
| Handcuff behind injury-prone workhorse | High upside play — inherits 20+ carries if starter goes down | Rounds 10–14 — strong value at this range | Skipping handcuffs entirely — they are free options on elite opportunity, available very late |
| Committee RB with 30%+ red zone share | Moderate — TD upside compensates for volume limitations | Rounds 8–11 | Avoiding committee RBs entirely — if they dominate red zone work, the TDs create ceiling weeks independent of volume |
| Pass-catching committee RB (5+ targets/game) | Good — PPR production + ceiling via TDs or yards explosions | Rounds 7–10 | Undervaluing in best ball — receiving volume from an RB produces consistent weekly contribution across all scoring formats |
| Aging veteran RB (age 30+, declining carries) | Low — limited ceiling, injury risk rises, carries decrease | Avoid unless extremely late (round 15+) and clear role confirmed | Drafting a 30-year-old RB at round 5 ADP because he had a good prior season — the decline is predictable and the best ball ceiling is capped |
Handcuff Value in Best Ball
Why handcuffs have outsized best ball value. Handcuffs — backup RBs who would inherit the starting role if the starter is injured — have more best ball value than in season-long fantasy for two reasons. First, in season-long fantasy, managers can pick up a handcuff off the waiver wire after the starter is injured. In best ball, there is no waiver wire: if you own the starter and the handcuff, you benefit automatically when the starter goes down and the handcuff inherits 20+ carries per game. Second, handcuffs behind workhorse starters with injury history carry significant upside because the opportunity they would inherit is elite-level volume.
Pairing starters with handcuffs. Best ball managers who own a fragile workhorse RB and his direct backup have an insurance play baked into their roster. When the starter is healthy, the backup adds minimal value. When the starter is hurt, the backup immediately becomes a starter-level asset. Drafting this pair at appropriate prices — when the handcuff is available in rounds 10–14 — is a reliable best ball construction edge.
When to Avoid RBs in Best Ball
Over-drafted bell cows. RBs who are over-drafted relative to their best-ball ceiling (drafted at round 3 ADP but who have minimal touchdown upside and receive no passing-game targets) are value traps in best ball. Their consistent floor does not generate the high-scoring weeks needed to advance in tournament formats. These RBs should be avoided at inflated prices in favor of upside WRs and TEs who carry higher ceiling.
