Best Ball Scoring Weeks: How Best Ball Fantasy Football Scores Are Calculated Week by Week

Standard best ball lineup requirements: most best ball competitions use a standard lineup of 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, and 1 FLEX (RB/WR/TE eligible), totaling 8 scoring slots per week. At the end of each week, the optimizer selects the 8 players from the roster who produce the highest combined fantasy score for those slots. The optimizer is constrained by position requirements — it cannot put three WRs in the RB slots, for example — but within those constraints it selects the globally optimal combination.

Weekly Score Calculation Mechanics

Tie-breaking and rounding. When two players produce identical fantasy scores in the same week (common with touchdowns generating round-point bonuses), the optimizer typically uses an internal tiebreaker (often roster order or player ID) to determine which player fills which slot. This rarely matters since the total score is the same regardless, but managers who are tracking which players were “activated” may notice the optimizer making one assignment versus another.

Players on bye weeks. Players on bye weeks produce zero points and are not selected into the optimal lineup. This means a roster with four WRs all on bye in the same week contributes zero WR points for that week, which is a significant score penalty. Bye week concentration in WR or RB groups is a meaningful roster risk that best ball managers should monitor during drafts — avoiding having all players at a position on the same bye week prevents catastrophic zero-activation weeks.


Season Score Totals

How the full season score accumulates. The final best ball roster score is the sum of all 17 weekly optimal lineup scores. Weeks where many players hit high scores contribute large numbers to the total; weeks where fewer players activate or players score lower contribute less. Rosters that have multiple players from the same high-scoring team or stack tend to have more weeks with high ceiling totals because team performance correlates across multiple rostered players.
