WR-only stacks versus QB-WR stacks: there are two forms of receiver stacking in best ball. The more common is the QB-WR stack (or QB-WR1-WR2 stack) where the quarterback and one or more of their receivers are on the same team — these are QB stacks with receiver components. The less common but also valid approach is drafting two or three WRs from a high-volume offense without the quarterback — this captures receiver correlation without the QB slot commitment. Which Offenses Support WR Stacking
High-volume passing offenses. The most effective WR stacks come from offenses that project for 33-plus pass attempts per game across a full season. The more a team throws, the more total receiving production is distributed across their WR corps, and the more weeks where multiple receivers reach double-digit fantasy scores simultaneously. WR stacks from run-first offenses fail because the ceiling for individual receivers is capped by insufficient passing volume — there are simply not enough catches to support multiple receivers posting high scores in the same game.
Multi-threat receiver rooms. Best ball WR stacks are most powerful in offenses with multiple legitimate receiving threats — at least 2 WRs who project for 90-plus seasonal targets — because the optimizer can activate either receiver in their best weeks. An offense with a clear WR1 (120 targets) and a distant WR2 (50 targets) does not benefit as much from stacking as one with a WR1 (120 targets) and WR2 (100 targets), because the second receiver has less independent upside in the 50-target scenario.
WR Stack vs. WR Portfolio
Differentiated portfolio approach. Some best ball managers prefer building a WR portfolio — selecting WRs from many different offenses rather than concentrating in 2–3 high-volume offenses — because the portfolio approach diversifies upside across many game environments. If any offense has an exceptional game, a portfolio manager is less likely to have multiple activations from that game, but they are also less exposed to a single offense having a bad game that suppresses multiple roster spots simultaneously. The choice between stacking and portfolio depends on the manager’s risk tolerance and how differentiated they want their roster to be from the field.
