Why WR volatility is an asset in best ball but a liability in standard formats: in standard weekly-lineup leagues, managers must decide each week which players to start; a WR who scores 2 points one week and 28 points the next week cannot be reliably started because sit decisions will sometimes incorrectly bench the 28-point week. Balancing volatile ceiling-chasers with consistent floor builders: (1) avoid building an entire WR roster of volatile players — while volatility is an asset in best ball, an all-volatile WR room creates situations where every WR has a bad week simultaneously; a roster built with 60% consistent WRs and 40% volatile ceiling-chasers captures the best-ball format advantage without the risk of across-the-board collapses; (2) place volatile WRs in late rounds — in rounds 9-12, high-volatility WRs with realistic ceiling events are highly appropriate because the draft cost is low and the upside is real; early rounds should anchor the roster with reliable target-share leaders; (3) pair volatile WRs with their QBs — a volatile WR who is correlated with a stacked QB creates the most valuable version of their volatile profile; when the WR has a monster week, the QB is likely also having a monster week (both count in the best ball lineup), and when the WR has an empty week, the QB’s production still generates lineup value through other correlated targets.

Worked Example: The Boom-Bust Deep Threat Best Ball Loves

A redraft player and a best-ball player look at the same TD-dependent deep threat: a WR who posts a quiet 4-catch, 45-yard dud most weeks but explodes for 28 whenever a couple of deep balls or red-zone looks connect. He downgrades the player. The best-ball player sees the opposite asset: with no start/sit decision, the optimizer automatically discards the 4-point weeks and counts every 28-point spike in full. The very variance that hurt redraft is pure upside here — he happily takes the WR in the late rounds where the draft cost is trivial and the ceiling is real.

But the best-ball player doesn’t overdose on volatility. If his entire WR room is boom-bust, he risks weeks where all of them go quiet at once and his lineup craters. So he anchors early rounds with reliable target-share leaders (a consistent floor) and concentrates the volatile ceiling-chasers in rounds 9–12 — roughly a 60% consistent / 40% volatile mix that captures the format edge without across-the-board collapse risk. And where he can, he stacks a volatile WR with his own QB: when the WR erupts, the QB likely erupts too (both count), and when the WR is quiet, the QB’s other correlated targets still generate lineup value. Same player, but by reading volatility as a best-ball asset — and managing the dose — he turns a redraft liability into a tournament weapon.

Common mistake: carrying redraft instincts into best ball and downgrading volatile, boom-bust WRs because their empty weeks feel risky.
