Best Ball Format Comparison: Half-PPR vs Full PPR vs TE Premium vs Superflex
The same draft strategy does not work across every best ball format. A manager who wins half-PPR best ball drafts by loading up on RBs might finish last in a TE premium superflex draft. Before entering any best ball contest, understand the scoring format and how it changes what you should be targeting.

Half-PPR Best Ball
Who it rewards: WR1s with consistent weekly target volume; bellcow RBs who produce through yardage and touchdowns; TEs with route-running roles; QBs who generate passing TDs in high-volume offenses.
Draft approach: WRs are the primary building block — load up 7–9 WRs. Target 5–6 RBs with a mix of roles. TE: binary decision — pay up for elite Tier 1 TE (Round 3–5) or fade entirely and take two mid-tier TEs in Rounds 10–14. QB: wait until Round 8–12 and take two.
Full PPR Best Ball
What changes vs half-PPR: The gap between a slot WR and an outside WR narrows significantly in favor of slots. Pass-catching RBs (3-down backs, dump-off specialists) are elevated 2–3 rounds. The WR pool is deeper with higher value — drafting 10+ WRs is more defensible. Goal-line-only RBs drop further because their value is purely TDs, not receptions.
Draft adjustments: Shift RB targeting toward pass-catching profiles. Elite pass-catching TEs become even more valuable. Otherwise, the same structural approach as half-PPR with amplified preference for volume receivers.
TE Premium Best Ball (1.5 PPR for TEs)
Why it exists: TEs typically see fewer targets than WRs but run shorter routes with higher catch rates. Standard PPR scoring keeps TEs at a structural disadvantage. TE premium corrects this by making each TE reception worth more.
Who it rewards: Elite route-running TEs with 70–90 catch seasons (80 catches × 1.5 = 120 reception points vs 80 points in standard PPR — a 40-point seasonal swing). Even mid-tier TEs become legitimate starting assets.
What changes:
- You MUST pay up for elite TEs — the structural advantage is too large to fade; mandatory Round 2–3
- Your second TE should be a solid mid-tier option, not a flier
- WR values compress slightly relative to TEs since top TEs compete with WR production
Superflex Best Ball
How it changes everything: With two QBs starting, the gap between a QB1 and a streaming QB2 is enormous. Elite QBs become the most valuable draft assets. QBs are drafted in Rounds 1–5 instead of Rounds 7–12.
Who it rewards: Elite dual-threat QBs who rush for extra points and throw 35+ TDs; high-volume passers in great offenses; WR1s whose QB is also a top draft asset.
Draft approach:
- Target one of the top 3–4 QBs in Rounds 1–3
- Secure a second viable QB by Round 5–6 (not a streaming handoff — a real starter)
- Fill WR and RB depth in Rounds 4–9 as the QB rush clears
- TE: same binary pay-up or fade; QB capital comes first
What changes for other positions: RB and WR values compress slightly because QB capital pulls attention to the position earlier than normal.
Choosing a Format to Play
Start with half-PPR if you are new to best ball. The strategy is transferable, the contest pool is largest, and the scoring is most familiar. Move to superflex and TE premium as you develop more format-specific knowledge.
