Best-Ball Format Variants: Auction, PPW, and Custom Scoring

Best-ball comes in variants.

Standard best-ball (snake draft, PPR) is the baseline. But many leagues use auction draft, points-per-win scoring, or custom scoring.

Your strategy should adapt to the format.

Auction Best-Ball

How it works: You have a budget (usually $200). You bid on players instead of drafting.

Strategy difference:

  • You can hoard elite players (spend $60 on two studs, get scraps elsewhere)
  • Or spread your budget (many mid-tier guys)
  • Or punt a position entirely (spend $0 on TE, focus RB/WR)

Draft approach:

  • Spend aggressively on tier-1 players (they’re scarce, others will bid high)
  • Save budget for mid-tier value (where you get steals)
  • Punt a position (TE or QB) if budget runs dry

Points-Per-Win (PPW) Scoring

How it works: Instead of cumulative points, each week is a win/loss. Winner gets 1 point.

Strategy difference:

  • Ceiling matters even more (you need to win weeks)
  • Boom/bust is valuable (winning by 50 points is the same as winning by 1)
  • Consistency is penalized (a 60-point week is worth 1, same as an 80-point week if you both win)

Draft approach:

  • Load up on upside (boom/bust is rewarded)
  • Don’t worry about floor (floor doesn’t help you win)
  • Target correlated players (game stacks help you win weeks)

TE Premium Best-Ball

How it works: TEs get bonus points (0.5 PPR instead of 0.1, or larger TDs).

Strategy difference:

  • Elite TE (Kelce) becomes must-draft
  • Mid-tier TE becomes more valuable

Draft approach:

  • Grab Kelce early (higher scarcity due to premium scoring)
  • Or punt TE and focus RB/WR (depends on league preference)

Superflex Best-Ball

How it works: The flex spot can be filled by QB (unusual).

Strategy difference:

  • QB scarcity increases (you need 2 good QBs)
  • Elite QB becomes more valuable

Draft approach:

  • Draft a tier-1 QB early
  • Draft a tier-2 QB by round 5–6
  • Flex is now QB, not RB/WR

Custom Scoring

Some leagues customize: 6-point TDs, 0.5 rush yards, etc.

Strategy: Calculate expected points in your league’s scoring format.

A player worth 140 points in standard PPR might be worth 160 in custom scoring.

Adjust your tiers accordingly.

The Payoff

Know your format. Adjust your draft strategy.

A ceiling-focused approach works for PPW but not standard best-ball.

An auction budget approach requires different thinking than snake draft.
