Injury-Proofing Your Best Ball Roster: How to Draft for Resilience When You Can't Drop Players

NFL injuries are not a possibility — they are a certainty. In any 18-week season, a meaningful portion of every fantasy roster will miss time due to injury. The question is not whether your players will get hurt; it is whether your roster can absorb those injuries without collapsing.

In redraft, you respond to injuries by picking up replacements from the waiver wire. In best ball, there is no waiver wire. The roster you drafted is the roster you have.

The Core Injury-Proofing Principle: Volume Over Stars

Why star-heavy rosters are fragile. A roster built around 2–3 elite players who carry the majority of expected points production is high-ceiling when healthy — and fragile when any of the stars gets injured. Losing 30% of your expected production to one injury changes the season.

Why volume-based rosters are resilient. A roster with 6–8 players who each contribute meaningfully distributes the injury risk. Losing one player costs you 1/7 of your production, not 1/3.

This does not mean ignoring elite players — it means building your roster around them rather than depending solely on them.


Position-Specific Injury Risk

Running backs are the highest-risk position. RBs have the highest injury rate in the NFL. They absorb contact on every carry, and their workload makes recovery time between games shorter. In best ball, drafting a WR-heavy roster with fewer early picks spent on RBs reduces the risk that a single position injury collapses your whole strategy.

Wide receivers have moderate injury risk. WRs do get injured, but at lower rates than RBs and with better recovery timelines. The depth at WR available through the mid-rounds of a best ball draft makes it easier to absorb WR injuries through roster depth.

Early QB injury matters less in standard best ball formats. QBs have lower injury rates than skill positions and most leagues carry 2–3 QBs on their best ball roster. If your primary QB misses time, your second QB fills in automatically.


Strategies for Building a Resilient Best Ball Roster

Draft backup potential at injury-prone positions. For running backs specifically, draft players who might step into a role if a starter goes down. Handcuffs (the backup to your starting RB) are valuable in best ball because they are guaranteed to be the replacement if the starter is injured.

Spread your production across multiple teams. A roster where all your top players are on the same NFL team is doubly fragile — one NFL team injury disaster affects multiple players simultaneously. Spreading production across different teams reduces this correlation.

Avoid injury-prone players without upside compensation. A player who has missed 20+ games over the past two seasons is more likely to miss games than the average player. If his upside does not compensate for that risk (he is going at an appropriate ADP discount), avoid him. If he has elite upside and is going at a deep discount because of the injury history, the risk may be worth it.

Target players returning to full health who are priced appropriately. A player coming off an injury who has been fully cleared may be discounted more than the actual injury risk warrants. The first season back from a torn ACL is sometimes the most productive of a player’s career. These players can be drafted at a discount that does not reflect their full ceiling.
