Best Ball: How to Navigate Late Preseason News and ADP Changes

Preseason news matters more in best ball because every draft decision is permanent. Once the draft ends, there are no waiver claims to fix a bad injury assumption and no trades to rebalance a roster. The edge is reacting to real role changes before ADP fully catches up.

Which News Actually Changes Draft Value?

Not every August headline deserves a draft-board move. Separate role-changing news from noise.

News type Draft impact Best response
Season-ending starter injury Major value shift Remove injured player; move direct replacement up
Multi-week injury with unclear return Moderate shift Discount player and add backup exposure
Single missed practice Usually noise Monitor, but do not overreact
Confirmed depth-chart promotion Major if role is fantasy-relevant Draft before ADP updates
Coach praise without usage proof Low Require practice-team or preseason deployment evidence
Scheme change with personnel fit Medium to major Upgrade players whose role expands

News Impact Decision Tree

When preseason news breaks, run the affected player through this tree before your next draft:

Injury to a Key Player

Who got injured?

FEATURE PLAYER (RB1, WR1, QB1):
  What is the expected timeline?
Season-ending (ACL, Lisfranc) → Remove from draft board entirely.
Immediately target his backup/handcuff 2–3 rounds earlier than their
current ADP. The market adjusts within 48–72 hours — draft before it does.

Multi-week (sprains, minor surgery, Aug return) → Slight discount.
Still draftable but at 1–2 rounds below pre-injury ADP.
Target the next-man-up at a moderate discount on his new higher ceiling.

Single practice (day-to-day, minor) → No ADP change warranted.
         Monitor; draft at current ADP.

SUPPORTING PLAYER (RB2, WR2, TE2):
Does his injury clear a path to a featured role for someone else?
YES → That someone else rises 2–4 rounds. Draft him before the market adjusts.
NO → Minimal impact. Move on.

Depth Chart Shuffle

Which direction did the change go?

PLAYER MOVED UP (earned a WR2 role, won a starting job):
How many rounds below his new expected production is his current ADP?
1–2 rounds below → Slight value. Prioritize him by 1 round.
3+ rounds below → Significant value. Draft aggressively before the market
                        catches up (typically 48–72 hours).

PLAYER MOVED DOWN (lost a role to a rookie, veteran passed him):
Does he still have a meaningful target/carry share left?
YES → Draft at a 2-round discount from previous ADP.
NO → Remove from target list. He has no fantasy value.

POSITION BATTLE SETTLED:
Was I previously discounting this player for the competition?
YES → Remove the discount. Draft him at full value for his role.
NO → He's already priced correctly. No change.

Scheme or Coaching Change

What type of change?

OFFENSE MORE PASS-HEAVY (new OC, air raid system):
→ WRs and TEs on this team rise 1–2 rounds.
QB rises (more attempts, better stats). RB falls 1–2 rounds.

OFFENSE MORE RUN-HEAVY (new OC, power scheme):
→ Featured RB on this team rises 1–2 rounds.
WRs and TEs fall 1–2 rounds.

12-PERSONNEL HEAVY (2 TEs used frequently):
→ One TE benefits significantly; the other is a blocker.
Identify which TE is the receiver. That TE rises 2–3 rounds.

QB CHANGE (new starter confirmed):
→ All receivers on that team recalibrate to the new QB's style.
Check new QB: pass-happy or run-first? Accurate or erratic?

How to Track Preseason News in August

Follow: Team beat reporters on Twitter/X (one per team covering your target players), FantasyPros News tab (aggregates player news), Rotowire player updates.

Best news windows:

  • Late July–early August: First padded practices — first real role evaluation
  • Late August: Final preseason games and final roster cuts confirm roles

Draft in early August to capture training camp news before ADP adjusts. Draft in late August to incorporate final cuts but accept that more preseason info is already baked in.

Pre-Draft Update Process (30 Minutes)

Before each best ball draft:

  1. Check the last 48 hours of player news on FantasyPros or Rotowire for your top 30 targets
  2. Run any significant news through the decision trees above
  3. Identify 3–5 players whose situations changed — update their target round
  4. Identify 3–5 players whose situations degraded — remove or downgrade

For 10+ team best ball drafters: full update once per week (Monday), quick 15-minute scan before each draft, immediate update when major news breaks.

Worked Example: Backup RB Becomes a Draft Target

A starting running back suffers a multi-week August injury. The backup has been running with the first team, catches passes well enough to stay on the field, and the offense is still projected to score points.

That backup should not merely move up one spot in your rankings. In best ball, he now has immediate spike-week access and early-season standalone usefulness. The question becomes how quickly the market will update. If his ADP has not moved yet, draft him aggressively for the next 24-48 hours. If ADP has already jumped several rounds, compare the new price to other backs in that range instead of chasing old value.

Backup profile Best ball action
Clear next man up with pass-game role Move up several rounds
Early-down backup only Move up, but keep exposure limited
Committee replacement with two other backs Small bump only
Bad offense with unclear goal-line role Do not chase just because a starter is hurt

Common mistake: reacting to every preseason blurb with the same intensity. A role-confirming injury, a coach compliment, and a maintenance day are different signals; only one should materially change your draft board.
