Best Ball Stacking: How to Build Ceiling Teams and Win Through Correlation
Best ball is a different game from redraft or dynasty—you draft and walk away. No waiver pickups, no adjustment at the deadline, no “wait for the right matchup” streaming. That freedom from management forces a completely different draft strategy: you draft for ceiling, not for consistency, and you build teams where your ceiling pieces correlate.
This is the pillar guide to best-ball stacking: the fundamental strategy that separates teams that luck into a title from teams that systematically maximize their upside.
The core insight. In redraft, you trade upside for consistency. In best ball, consistency is less valuable than you think—you can’t start benched players anyway. Ceiling is everything.
Why best ball flips the draft strategy
In redraft, you spend a pick on a solid player with a safe floor—you’ll start him most weeks, so consistency matters. In best ball, that safety net doesn’t exist. Your lineup is set week 1, and only the highest-scoring eligible players across all positions count.
This creates a reversal: you want your best outcomes to cluster in the same weeks.
A redraft team with QB scoring 18 points and WR scoring 15 is great—you got 33 points from two positions. A best-ball team with QB scoring 18 and WR scoring 2, then later in the season QB scoring 8 and WR scoring 16, averages the same but wastes scoring power—you get 18 one week, 16 another, never 34.
The goal in best ball is to correlate your ceiling plays so that in your team’s boom weeks, as many pieces as possible score big together.
Game stacks: the foundation
A game stack is when you draft multiple players from the same NFL game, betting that when that game is high-scoring, your pieces will cascade together.
A simple example:
- Draft QB Patrick Mahomes and WR Travis Kelce (both Chiefs).
- If Kansas City has a 45-point game, both are likely to score big; if they have a 17-point snooze, both underperform.
- You’re correlating—betting on the same positive outcome to lift both pieces at once.
Why it works:
- When one piece has a boom game, the other often does too. Mahomes throwing for 400 yards usually means Kelce caught several passes.
- You win best ball on your ceiling weeks, not your average. Correlation turns a great individual week into a truly elite team week.
- The stacking premium in best ball is real—stacked teams win more often than evenly distributed teams.
Types of stacks
Pass catchers + QB (the classic):
- Pair a QB with one of his top receivers or TE.
- Simple, intuitive, and the baseline stack.
- The ceiling: QB throws for 400 yards and 4 TD, WR catches 200 yards and 2 of those TDs. That’s 60+ points from 2 players.
Game stack: double wide receiver (ceiling over floor):
- Draft two WRs from the same team/game.
- Riskier than QB + pass catcher (if the game is a defensive slugfest, both lose), but higher ceiling if the game explodes.
- Use in high-octane offenses (good QB, pass-heavy scheme, talented receivers).
RB + pass catcher (opportunity overlap):
- A running back and his team’s primary receiver.
- Less direct correlation than QB + WR (the RB doesn’t automatically feed the receiver), but still connected through offensive volume.
- Useful when you can’t draft an elite QB and need to correlate differently.
Secondary stacks (off-game)::
- Don’t stack every draft pick. One or two stacks per team is the meta; three+ gets too concentrated and loses flexibility.
- A secondary stack might be a boom-or-bust play (a 3rd receiver in a pass-heavy game).
Choosing which games to stack
Not all games are created equal. Target games with the highest scoring potential.
High-scoring games have:
- Powerful offenses (good QB, good receivers, aggressive coordinator).
- Weak defenses (opponents’ defenses are bad—can’t force punts).
- Pace (fast-paced games, fewer defensive stands).
- Over/unders. An over/under of 50 is a higher-ceiling game than 42.
Predictive markers:
- Strength of schedule: stacks teams playing weak defenses, not strong ones.
- Weather: cold, windy games suppress scoring. Domes and warm-weather games correlate with higher ceilings.
- Game importance: playoff games often get more conservative play-calling. Regular season high-stakes games (division rivals, primetime) are higher ceiling.
The MVP stack pattern
The MVP stack is when you put your highest-ceiling piece in a stack with supporting pieces from the same game, building a “pyramid” of ceiling outcomes.
Example:
- Round 2: Elite WR (top-tier talent, boom ceiling)
- Round 4: That WR’s QB
- Round 7: That team’s other WR (lower ceiling, but correlates with the primary receiver)
When this game goes boom, the WR scores 30, the QB scores 28, and the secondary WR scores 18. Your three pieces are now 76 combined—elite weeks. When the game is mediocre, you get more modest returns, but the structure is still there.
This is different from spreading talent evenly; it’s building a ceiling pyramid where one MVP piece pulls the rest of the team forward on great weeks.
Avoiding stack mistakes
Over-stacking the same team:
- Two pieces per team is usually optimal. Three pieces from the same offense limits your flexibility and leaves you exposed if that team has a down week.
- Exception: elite high-volume offenses (Kansas City, Buffalo) can support 2–3 pieces safely.
Stacking a bad game:
- If the game’s over/under is low, or both offenses are weak, don’t force a stack just because you like the players. Stack high-ceiling games, not every game.
Ignoring the floor in best ball (a common trap):
- You still need some floor. Stacking a boom-or-bust receiver is fine; stacking a boom-or-bust RB and a boom-or-bust receiver into the same game is risky.
- Build your ceiling through stacks; build your floor through solid, consistent late-round depth pieces.
Forgetting that defenses exist:
- A great stack can go quiet if a defense plays well. This is why you don’t stack the game’s lowest-scoring offense; stack games, not teams you like in a vacuum.
The meta-game: stacking strategy across your draft
Early rounds (1–3):
- Identify high-ceiling games and draft your MVP piece from the best game.
- Secure an elite QB or pass catchers with defined roles.
Middle rounds (4–6):
- Stack your MVP with complementary pieces from the same game.
- Build a second, smaller stack if the opportunity is there (not required).
Late rounds (7+):
- Fill floor with consistent depth pieces.
- Grab a second QB or secondary pieces that add ceiling without over-concentrating.
The result:
- Your ceiling weeks are driven by 1–2 stacks hitting; your floor is cushioned by deep pieces.
- This structure wins best-ball tournaments where the margin of victory is often 1–3 points (ceiling matters more than you’d think).
Correlation in redraft vs. best ball
The key difference: redraft punishes correlation; best ball rewards it.
- Redraft: If your stack has a quiet week, you bench the underperformer next week. You want diversity because you manage the lineup.
- Best ball: You can’t bench anyone. If your entire team’s ceiling depends on the same three games, you win when those games explode and lose when they don’t. The variance is higher, but the ceiling is higher too.
Best ball is a tournament format at its heart. You’re not trying to have a reliably good season—you’re trying to have one great season where everything correlates.
The payoff
Best-ball stacking is a discipline:
- Think in games, not teams. Which NFL games have the highest ceiling?
- Build MVP stacks in those games—one elite piece, supporting pieces that correlate.
- Avoid over-stacking. Two pieces per game is the sweet spot; three+ is diminishing.
- Pair ceiling with floor. Stacks drive your upside; late-round depth pieces are your safety net.
- Monitor game scripts in-season. A game that seemed high-ceiling but turns out to be a defensive battle won’t deliver.
