Best Ball Stacking: How to Build QB-WR Stacks That Win Tournaments
The core insight behind stacking is correlation. When a QB throws a 40-yard TD to his WR1, both players score. When the same QB throws three TDs in a 35-point game, the WR who caught two of them is also having a huge day. Stacking concentrates that correlated upside on your roster instead of letting it go to waste on someone else’s.

The Basic QB-WR Stack
If your QB throws for 350 yards and 3 TDs, and your stacked WR catches 7 balls for 90 yards and 2 of those TDs, you benefit twice from the same offensive game. Without the stack, you might have your QB on one roster and someone else in your league holds the WR.
Why it matters in best ball specifically: In best ball, your lineup is set automatically based on highest scores. You are not managing week-to-week start/sit decisions. Your edge comes entirely from the players you draft. A QB-WR stack guarantees that when your QB has a shootout week — the kind of week that wins tournaments — you are also getting the correlated WR points.
Stack Structures
Mini stack (QB + 1 WR): The simplest form. One QB paired with his top target. Works in all formats.
Full stack (QB + WR1 + WR2 or TE): More correlated upside — when the offense explodes, you capture more of it. The risk is more of your roster tied to one team’s performance.
Bring-back: After stacking a QB with his receiver, also roster a WR or RB from the opposing defense. When there is a shootout, both offenses score — your stack wins, and your bring-back wins too. This adds another layer of correlation to a high-scoring game.
Stacking by Position
QB + WR: The most efficient stack. WR1 from a pass-heavy offense is the first target. WR2 from the same team can be a secondary stack at a value price.
QB + TE: Works when the TE is a true pass-game centerpiece with high target share and red zone usage. Elite receiving TEs correlate with QB performance the same way a WR1 does.
QB + RB: Less efficient for pass-game correlation. RBs catch passes but are rarely the primary passing target. QB-RB stacks make sense when the RB is heavily used as a receiver in a pass-first offense, but QB-WR is almost always the stronger stack structure.
How Many Stacks to Carry
In a single best ball roster (typically 18 picks), most winning roster constructions carry:
- 1 primary stack: QB + WR1 from the same offense (picked within the first 6 rounds)
- 1 mini-stack: A second QB + at least 1 WR from the same offense (mid-rounds)
- 1–2 bring-backs: A player from an opponent the stacked QB faces in a key week
This gives the roster multiple correlation scenarios — if the primary stack goes cold, the secondary stack may fire; if there is a shootout, the bring-back adds points.
Common Stacking Mistakes
Stacking low-volume offenses. A QB-WR stack only pays off when the offense is pass-heavy. An efficient game-manager on a run-first team can produce a reasonable QB week without the WR getting enough targets to matter.
Ignoring price. Finding a QB in Round 6–8 with a legitimate WR1 that you can also take in Round 4–5 is better tournament construction than paying up for the obvious stack everyone holds.
Over-stacking one team. Cap stack depth at 3 players from any one offense.
Forgetting the bring-back. Adding a bring-back to a primary stack is one of the highest-value picks in best ball drafts. It is often undervalued because managers focus on their stack and forget that the opponent in a projected shootout is also valuable.
