Upside vs. Floor in Best Ball: Why Ceiling Always Wins Tournaments
In redraft fantasy, floor matters enormously. In best ball, floor is largely irrelevant. A player who scores 2 points this week has no negative consequence — your best-ball lineup just doesn’t use them. The only weeks that matter are the weeks a player explodes.

The Best Ball Scoring Math
How best ball advancement works: You draft 18–20 players. Each week, the platform automatically selects your optimal lineup. A player who scores 4 points doesn’t hurt you — they’re just not selected.
Why ceiling beats floor: Player value in best ball = (probability of a big game) × (average size of those big games). A player who averages 14 points with a ceiling of 22 is good in redraft. A player who averages 12 points with a ceiling of 35 has more best ball value — when they hit their ceiling, they contribute 35 points. When they don’t, your other players cover.
The tournament math: A roster that averages 150 points per week rarely wins a 12-team tournament. A roster that occasionally explodes for 220+ points — because players hit ceilings simultaneously — wins.
Players to Prioritize in Best Ball
High-ceiling, high-variance WRs: WRs with high aDOT (average depth of target) who catch deep balls — one deep ball = 20+ points. Volatile WRs who have 3-point weeks and 40-point weeks. The 3-point weeks don’t hurt you; the 40-point weeks win tournaments.
Mobile QBs: Scrambling QBs add rushing yards and TDs on top of passing production. A QB who runs for 60 yards and a TD while throwing for 320 yards produces a 45-point best ball week. Static pocket passers have significantly lower ceilings.
Elite TEs with volume: TEs in high-target-share offenses who occasionally catch multiple TDs. An elite TE seeing 8+ targets per game can produce 30+ points in a single week, transforming your lineup’s ceiling that week.
Pass-catching RBs with home-run potential: RBs with catch-and-run ability or breakaway speed — a 70-yard TD catch creates a ceiling week. Grind-out RBs with no TD access have no meaningful best ball ceiling.
How to Adjust Your Draft Board for Best Ball
The three questions for every player:
- What is the best game this player could have this season?
- How many times might they have that game?
- What is their floor on bad weeks?
Questions 1 and 2 matter far more than 3 in best ball.
Position-specific adjustments:
QB: Value mobile QBs and QBs on pass-heavy teams with volume upside. Downgrade static pocket passers with no rushing ceiling. Your QB’s ceiling week often determines whether your best-ball entry advances.
WR: Value deep-threat receivers and players in high-powered offenses over possession receivers with reliable floors. High aDOT = deep balls = high-ceiling plays.
RB: Value RBs in the aerial game (PPR pass-catchers) and RBs with home-run potential (breakaway speed, catch-and-run TD access). Downgrade pure grind backs in run-heavy schemes with limited TD opportunities.
TE: Value TEs with high target share who receive red-zone looks — an elite TE with 8+ targets per game and goal-line access can produce 30+ point weeks when touchdowns cluster.
The Danger of Overdrafting “Safe” Players
The Round 8 trap: Two players — a rock-solid WR2 projecting 10–14 points per game with minimal variance, or a volatile WR projecting 11 points per game with a 3-point floor and 30-point ceiling.
In redraft: Player A. You need him every week.
In best ball: Player B may be correct. His 3-point weeks don’t hurt you. His 30-point weeks can advance your entry. If you already have 3 solid WRs, Player A adds a 7th consistent option that doesn’t move the needle. Player B gives you a potential ceiling-week winner.
This doesn’t mean always take the boom-or-bust player — it means understanding why ceiling matters before making the decision.
Combining Ceiling with Volume
The best best-ball assets combine ceiling with volume:
- High targets (7+/game) + high aDOT = volume ceiling (consistent opportunities, some explosive)
- High targets + red-zone looks = TD upside converting opportunities into points
- High touches (RB) + pass-catching role = both run production and catch-and-run ceiling
A WR who gets 3 targets per game might hit a 40-point ceiling once all season. A WR who gets 8+ targets per game has ceiling potential every week — and that’s what wins best ball.
