Best-Ball Variance and Luck: Accepting Outcomes You Can't Control

Best-ball has higher variance than redraft.

In redraft, you set lineups (control outcomes). In best-ball, auto-fill decides (you have no control). Accept that a great roster can lose due to bad luck. Focus on ceiling (what you can control), not results (what you can’t).


The Variance Sources

Redraft variance: Bye weeks, injuries, one bad start loses you a week

Best-ball variance: All of the above PLUS auto-fill luck (did auto-fill start your boom player?), matchup clustering (did all your high-ceiling weeks align with team byes?), correlation (if your stack had a bad week, many studs busted)


The Ceiling vs. Results Gap

Great roster, bad luck:

  • Ceiling: 110 ppg per week (high)
  • Actual (bad auto-fill): 92 ppg per week (underperformed ceiling)
  • Result: Finish 4th when ceiling said you should win

Bad roster, good luck:

  • Ceiling: 80 ppg per week (low)
  • Actual (lucky auto-fill): 85 ppg per week (exceeded ceiling)
  • Result: Finish 2nd when ceiling said you should lose in playoffs

The Acceptance Framework

You control:

  • Your draft (select high-ceiling players)
  • Your roster construction (depth where auto-fill will need it)
  • Your entry count and which contests you enter

Note how short that list is. Best-ball hands you no trades, no waivers, and no adds — the draft is the whole of your agency, which is exactly why variance feels so large afterward.

You don’t control:

  • Auto-fill decisions (which players start each week)
  • Matchup clustering (does your boom week align with theirs?)
  • Injuries (can happen anytime)
  • Variance (one team booms, one team busts, bad luck)

Focus on what you control. Accept what you don’t.


The Sample Size Problem

One season is a small sample.

Your roster might have a 110 ppg ceiling, but one 17-week sample might yield 92 ppg (bad luck, bad auto-fill).

Over 5 seasons, the ceiling would average closer to 105 ppg.

But you only have one season. Accept the variance.


The Worked Example

Scenario: You built a best-ball roster with a 110 ppg ceiling.

Weeks 1-8 results:

  • Average: 98 ppg (below ceiling)
  • You’re underperforming (auto-fill is suboptimal, bad luck)

Weeks 9-17 results:

  • You tighten up free agent adds
  • Auto-fill improves (breakouts are hitting)
  • Average: 105 ppg

Season total: (98 × 8) + (105 × 9) = 784 + 945 = 1,729 ppg

Ceiling projection: 110 × 17 = 1,870 ppg

Gap: 141 points (7.5% below ceiling)

Verdict: Good season, great ceiling, bad luck. Accept it.


When It’s Not Luck (Mistake)

Scenario: Your ceiling was actually 95 ppg, you got 92 ppg.

That’s not bad luck. Your ceiling estimate was wrong.

How to tell:

  • Look back at your roster: Did it have 110 ppg ceiling or 95 ppg?
  • If your analysis said 95 ppg and you got 92 ppg: Good job, close to ceiling.
  • If your analysis said 110 ppg and you got 92 ppg: Bad analysis or bad luck. Audit which.

The Payoff

Accepting variance in best-ball:

  • Reduces frustration (you can’t control everything)
  • Focuses effort (optimize what you control)
  • Improves long-term thinking (one season is a sample)
