Wide Receiver Upside in Best Ball: How to Target WRs Who Win Tournaments

In best ball tournaments, the WRs who win you money aren’t necessarily the most reliable — they’re the ones who had the most ceiling weeks at the right time. A WR who scores 4, 5, 32, 5, 41 across five weeks is worth more than a WR who scores a steady 12–15, because the automatic lineup feature selects your best-scoring players each week. Ceiling breakers are disproportionately wide receivers.

What Creates WR Ceiling in Best Ball

Volume: Target share is the foundation. You can’t have a ceiling week without opportunities. WRs with 25%+ team target share in a pass-heavy offense have the most ceiling potential because there are more targets to win.

Touchdowns: The multiplier. A WR who produces 7 points on 8 catches can produce 25 points on 5 catches and a TD. But TD-dependent ceiling weeks are less reliable than volume + TD ceiling weeks. Target high-volume WRs in TD-friendly offenses.

Air yards: WRs targeted deep accumulate more scoring per catch when they convert. A 50-yard gain on one catch is worth more than five 8-yard gains in PPR. Deep-target WRs generate ceiling weeks from fewer catches.

Game script: WRs on teams expected to trail see more passing volume. Targeting WRs on teams projected as underdogs in high-total games captures “negative game script” upside — these WRs get more target opportunities when their team is forced to pass.


WR Stack Construction

QB + WR1 + WR2 from the same team: The most common stack. In a 50-point QB week, both primary receivers likely scored 18–25 points each. Concentrates ceiling across three rostered players.

QB + WR1 + opponent WR1 (game stack): High over/under games mean both teams pass frequently. Owning WR1s from both teams captures the ceiling regardless of who wins — one team’s WR will have a big game in a shootout.

Slot + outside WR from the same team: Some teams have two high-volume WRs in complementary roles. Owning both concentrates target share without paying WR1 price for both positions.


WRs to Avoid in Best Ball

WRs on run-first teams: The best WR in the league can’t produce ceiling weeks if the offense runs 60% of plays. Avoid WRs on historically run-heavy teams unless the QB situation is dramatically different.

WRs in murky split situations: Two WRs projected to split targets 50/50 — neither has the volume for consistent ceiling weeks. A WR2 in a genuine committee is worth less than a WR1 with 70% of the team’s top WR targets.

Veterans 30+ on decreasing target share: Older WRs often see declining roles without it being reflected in their ADP or reputation. Don’t pay for the name.
