WR Depth Strategy in Best Ball: How to Build the Right Wide Receiver Room
In most best ball drafts, the managers who win are the ones who built the deepest, most productive WR rooms. The format rewards WR accumulation because the auto-set deploys your best WR performance each week regardless of which player hits. A WR who blows up in Week 7 scores for you whether he was your projected WR1 or your 6th WR at draft time.

Why WRs Dominate Best Ball
The ceiling advantage: WRs have more single-week upside than any other skill position in PPR formats. A WR who catches 8 passes for 120 yards and 2 TDs scores 32+ PPR points — a performance that swings a best ball matchup by itself.
The consistency advantage: Compared to RBs, WRs have lower injury rates and more stable roles. A WR with an established starting role in a pass-heavy offense will produce week after week. RBs face committee risk, carry load injury, and game-script dependency.
The depth advantage: NFL offenses deploy 3–4 WRs for most snaps. There are 32 teams, each with 2–3 WRs who can produce fantasy points. Quality WRs are available into the later rounds of best ball drafts.
How Many WRs to Draft
Standard approach (7–9 WRs): In an 18–20 player best ball roster, experienced managers typically draft 7–9 WRs:
- 2–3 early WRs (Rounds 1–5): clear WR1/WR2 profiles with guaranteed roles and consistent weekly production
- 2–3 mid-round WRs (Rounds 6–10): WR2/WR3 types with upside, defined roles, or emerging usage
- 2–3 late-round WRs (Rounds 11–16): ceiling plays, breakout candidates, or slot receivers with target volume in good offenses
WR-heavy approach (10+ WRs): Accepting that 1–2 of the late WRs will be dead roster spots in exchange for a higher ceiling when the room hits. Most defensible in full PPR formats, leagues with a WR-favored flex, or deep drafts where quality WRs remain available in Rounds 14–16.
Types of WRs to Target
Slot receivers with volume: Slot WRs who command 8–10 targets per game are among the most consistent best ball plays. They see volume regardless of game script, catch a high percentage of their targets, and accumulate receptions that floor out weekly scores in PPR.
Outside WR1s on pass-heavy offenses: A clear WR1 on a team that throws 35+ times per game is the ideal early-round target. Even in tough matchups, target volume keeps them involved. Even off weeks — 8 targets for 65 yards and no TD — produces 12.5 PPR points.
High-upside WR2s on great offenses: A WR2 on a team with an elite QB will have weeks where the offense is flowing and he gets 9 targets instead of the usual 5. These boom weeks are what best ball auto-set is designed to capture.
Breakout candidates: Late-round WRs with a path to a significant role increase are best ball gold. A second-year WR now on a new team as the clear WR2, available in Round 12–14, costs little but provides enormous upside if he breaks out.
WR Stacking for Best Ball Upside
Pairing a QB with one or more of his receivers is the highest-upside best ball strategy. When a QB throws for 350 yards and 3 TDs, both his score and his WRs’ scores go up simultaneously. A QB-WR stack gives you correlated upside: big passing game days benefit multiple players on your roster simultaneously, creating the enormous single-week totals that win best ball tournaments.
