Fantasy Football Player Limits: How Commissioners Set Same-Team and Same-Position Roster Restrictions

Player limits are optional roster rules that restrict how concentrated a fantasy team can be in a single NFL team or position. They exist primarily to prevent obviously degenerate strategies — like rostering an entire offense — that could be unfair or reduce competitive diversity.

Same-NFL-Team Player Limits

The problem they solve. Without a same-team limit, a manager could theoretically roster a QB, 3 WRs, 2 RBs, and a TE from the same team. When that team has a big game, this manager gets a massive advantage. If that team has a bad game, they are destroyed. This extreme concentration reduces strategic diversity.

Typical limits. Most leagues that use same-team limits set them at 3–4 players maximum from any single NFL team. This prevents extreme concentration while still allowing natural stacking (QB + WR from the same team).

When to use same-team limits. Leagues with experienced managers who understand correlations benefit from same-team limits. In beginner leagues, the complexity of enforcing limits may not be worth the benefit.


Same-Position Roster Limits

The problem they solve. Without position limits, a manager could draft 8 WRs and 0 RBs, then stream RBs from the waiver wire every week. While this is a legitimate strategy in some formats, most leagues prefer rosters that require committing to a starting-caliber player at each position.

Typical limits. Redraft leagues typically do not use explicit position limits — the starting lineup requirements (must start 2 RBs) implicitly force position distribution. Dynasty leagues sometimes cap roster positions more explicitly (maximum 6 WRs, maximum 4 RBs).

IDP leagues. In leagues with Individual Defensive Players, position limits become more important. The sheer number of defensive positions creates hoarding opportunities without limits.


When Player Limits Are Not Needed

Small leagues. In 8–10 team leagues, the player pool is large enough relative to roster size that concentration is naturally limited. Player limits add complexity without much benefit.

Best ball formats. Best ball does not benefit from same-team limits the same way redraft does — the entire point of stacking in best ball is correlation. Limiting this removes a core strategic element.
