Fantasy Football Pre-Draft Commissioner Prep: What Commissioners Must Do Before Draft Day

The two most common draft-day disasters are: a manager who does not show up, and a platform setting that was never configured correctly. Both are preventable with a week of intentional preparation.

Pre-Draft Commissioner Checklist

Prep task When to complete What can go wrong if skipped Quick verification
Confirm all draft spots are filled 7–10 days before the draft An open spot discovered the night before creates a rushed replacement search that produces a low-quality replacement manager Verify the full roster count in the commissioner panel — count human-confirmed owners, not default auto-draft slots
Collect dues from all managers Before draft access is granted A manager who drafts without paying creates an enforcement problem if they later refuse to pay Do not enable draft access until dues are marked paid; no exceptions regardless of relationships
Verify every scoring setting 5–7 days before the draft A misconfigured PPR setting or bonus category discovered in Week 4 creates disputes that cannot be reversed without retroactive scoring chaos Walk through each scoring category in the commissioner panel explicitly; do not assume last year’s settings carried over correctly
Verify roster settings and positions 5–7 days before the draft A wrong flex position or incorrect roster spot count discovered on draft night cannot be fixed mid-draft Confirm starting lineup slots, total roster size, taxi squad if dynasty, IR slots — every roster setting
Test the draft room 2–3 days before the draft A draft timer malfunction discovered on draft night creates chaos and complaints Run a mock draft or use the draft room preview to confirm pick timers work, the queue functions, and you know how to pause if needed
Send pre-draft reminder 24 hours before the draft Managers who forgot the time zone conversion or the draft link create last-minute problems One message: exact time, time zone, draft link, dues status reminder — keep it brief

Pre-Draft Commissioner Checklist (Full)

Confirm all draft spots are filled. At least 1 week before the draft, verify every team has a confirmed human owner. If you have an empty spot, you have 1 week to find a replacement — not 1 hour.

Collect dues. Do not allow managers to draft before their dues are paid. A manager who drafts but does not pay creates a messy situation if they later refuse. Dues first, draft access second.

Verify scoring and roster settings. Log into the commissioner panel and walk through every scoring category and roster setting. Confirm: positions, flex eligibility, PPR settings, DEF/ST scoring, kicker scoring, bonus settings. A misconfigured scoring rule discovered mid-season creates disputes you cannot reverse.

Test the draft room. If your platform supports a mock draft or draft room preview, use it. Confirm the draft timer works, the pick queue functions, and you know how to pause the draft if needed.

Day-of Reminders

Send a reminder message 24 hours before. One reminder message in the league chat the day before the draft confirms the time, link, and dues status. Keep it short.
