The trade deadline is not just a calendar setting — it is a governance tool that affects team behavior throughout the season. Managers make different decisions knowing when they can and cannot trade.

When to Set the Trade Deadline
Week 10–11 is the most common window. Most leagues set the trade deadline somewhere between Weeks 10–11. This allows teams that are 4–5 wins (on the playoff bubble) to make a move for a missing piece, while preventing extreme late-season trades that could be collusion-adjacent.
Why not set it later (Week 12–13). The closer to the playoffs the deadline falls, the more likely a team with playoff positioning can execute a trade with a rebuilding team that looks like gaining at the expense of playoff integrity. Week-12 trades can directly affect playoff seeding.
Why not set it earlier (Week 7–8). Setting the deadline too early cuts off genuine in-season roster management. A manager who is 3-4 after 7 weeks is still in playoff contention in most leagues — closing trades at Week 7 removes a legitimate strategic tool.
Trading After the Deadline
Waivers remain open. Even after the trade deadline closes, free agent acquisition continues. Waiver wire management is not affected by the trade deadline.
Document clearly in the league constitution. Include the exact week and day of trade deadline close in your constitution. Disputes about whether a pending trade counts before or after the deadline are avoidable if the rule is explicit.
