Evolving Your League Constitution: When and How to Update Rules

Your league constitution will change.

Year 1 is your baseline. Years 2+ will have problems to solve and improvements to make. Evolve your constitution by collecting feedback, voting on changes, and documenting them.

The Evolution Cycle

January (Post-championship):

  • Collect feedback: “What should we change?”
  • Compile proposals: List top 3-5 changes

February (Rule discussion):

  • Email each proposal to the league
  • Give managers 1 week to debate
  • Take a vote (majority wins)

March (Update document):

  • Update constitution with new rules
  • Send updated version to all managers
  • File the dated version (archive prior years)

April–June (Confirmation):

  • Managers acknowledge the new rules
  • Constitution is locked for the upcoming season

The Common Changes

Year 2 (Common problems):

  • Trade deadline too early (moved from week 8 to week 10)
  • Veto rules too strict or too loose (refined)
  • Scoring issues (clarified)
  • IR spot changes (added if using platform default)

Year 3+ (Refinements):

  • Playoff format adjustment (changed from single-elimination to double-elimination)
  • Keeper rules (modified costs or eligibility)
  • Division realignment (if growing to 14 teams)

The Voting Process

Email template:

RULE CHANGE PROPOSAL

CURRENT RULE:
Trade deadline is Week 8 (no trades after this date)

PROPOSED CHANGE:
Trade deadline is Week 10 (more trading time, less rushing)

REASONING:
Three managers requested more time to make trades in years 1-2. Week 10 gives us 5 weeks before playoffs to negotiate.

VOTE:
- Yes (move deadline to Week 10)
- No (keep deadline at Week 8)

Voting deadline: February 15
Majority vote wins (7 of 12 teams needed to pass)

The Archive

Keep copies of all constitutions by year:

  • 2025_Constitution_v1.pdf (original)
  • 2026_Constitution_v2.pdf (after year 2 changes)
  • 2027_Constitution_v3.pdf (after year 3 changes)

This creates a record of how the league evolved.

The No-Change Scenario

If a rule works, don’t change it.

Don’t vote on a new rule just because one manager suggested it. Only change rules that multiple managers agree need fixing.

The Living Document Philosophy

Your constitution is alive.

It will grow, change, and improve as you learn what works and what doesn’t. That’s healthy.

The Payoff
