Commissioner Draft Day Guide: How to Prepare, Set Up, and Run Your Fantasy Draft

Most draft day problems are preventable. Most are caused by commissioners who set up the platform the night before rather than the week before.

Pre-Draft Setup (1–2 Weeks Before)

Platform settings to confirm:

  1. Scoring settings: Verify every category is correct — PPR value (0, 0.5, or 1.0), yardage scoring, TD scoring, position-specific bonuses. One wrong decimal point can have a massive scoring impact all season.
  2. Roster requirements: Confirm starting positions and total roster size. If using Superflex or FLEX rules, verify these are set correctly.
  3. Draft settings: Confirm draft order method (manual, random, snake vs. auction), draft time per pick, and pause settings.
  4. Waiver settings: Confirm waiver priority type (rolling, FAAB, or reset to reverse standings each week), processing day, and waiver budget if using FAAB.
  5. Trade settings: Confirm trade review window length and veto rules.
  6. Playoffs: Confirm number of playoff teams, playoff weeks, and tiebreaker settings.

Send settings to managers: One week before the draft, send all managers a summary of league settings. Ask them to confirm receipt. This surfaces objections before the draft — not during it.

24–48 Hours Before the Draft

Verify all managers are confirmed. Every manager should have logged in, accepted their league invite, and confirmed their draft position. Contact anyone who has not logged in directly.

Test autodraft settings. Verify that each manager’s player rankings or queue are populated correctly. An empty queue means the platform will autodraft at its own priority, which may not match the manager’s preferences.

Set up a backup communication channel. Confirm you have a group text, group chat, or Slack channel where you can reach everyone instantly if the platform has issues during the draft.

Draft Day Logistics

Start on time. Give a 10-minute warning to all managers before the start. If a manager is not present at start time, begin the draft and let autodraft cover their early picks. A draft that starts late because managers are not ready is disorganized and signals poor commissioner execution.

Handle technical issues quickly. If the platform goes down or a pick does not register, do not panic. Have the backup communication channel active. Most minor platform glitches resolve in minutes. If the platform is down for more than 10–15 minutes, consider pausing the draft and rescheduling rather than rushing through with a broken platform.

Reversing a pick in error. A manager who selected the wrong player immediately after the pick should contact the commissioner immediately. The commissioner can reverse the pick on most platforms within a short window — typically before 2–3 additional picks have been made. After that, reversals become too disruptive to permit.

Keeper league reminder. In keeper leagues, verify keeper designations were submitted and locked before the draft starts.

After the Draft

Review all picks for platform errors. Immediately after the draft ends, scan all rosters for obvious errors — duplicate picks, missing picks, players assigned to the wrong team.

Send a post-draft message. A brief message acknowledging the draft, noting anything unusual, and confirming the first waiver wire date signals that someone is in charge and paying attention.

Worked Example

Imagine a manager loses access to the draft room five minutes before the start. A prepared commissioner already has a backup chat, knows how autodraft works, and has confirmed the manager’s queue. The draft starts on time while the manager reconnects. That is a minor issue.

Now imagine the commissioner did not verify access or backup communication. The same login issue delays 11 other managers, creates pressure to pause, and turns a preventable problem into a league-wide frustration.

Common mistake: treating draft day as only the platform’s responsibility. The platform hosts the draft, but the commissioner owns preparation, communication, and the backup plan.
