Commissioner Guide: How to Run a Great Draft Day Experience
A great draft day does not happen by accident. It requires preparation weeks before the draft, communication in the days before, and clear decision-making when problems arise on the day itself.
Draft Day Quick Reference
| Decision | Guideline | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Calendar invite | Send 3+ weeks before with date, time zone, platform link, and draft order announcement date | Announcing the draft date 3 days before — managers have conflicts |
| Dues collection | Complete before the draft — no money, no draft pick | Collecting during or after the draft; chasing payment mid-season |
| Draft order announcement | 24–48 hours before the draft | Announcing on draft day — managers have no time to prepare their queue |
| Platform test | Test the draft room before the draft: all managers can access, settings are correct, know how to pause/resume | Discovering a platform error after the draft has started |
| Start time | Start on time regardless of who is missing | Starting 12+ minutes late because two managers are “almost there” |
| Pick timer | 90 seconds per pick (live); 90–120 seconds (live online); 4–8 hours (slow draft) | No timer — drafts drag and lose energy |
| Manager no-show | Set to auto-pick by pick 2; contact on the side; draft proceeds | Pausing the draft for one missing manager |
Weeks Before the Draft
Confirm date, time, and format. Send a calendar invite at least 3 weeks in advance including: date and time (specify time zone if league is spread across regions); draft format (live in-person, live online, or slow draft); platform and link; draft order announcement date.
Collect dues before the draft. No money, no draft pick. Announce this policy when you send the calendar invite.
Set the draft order. Send the draft order at least 24–48 hours before the draft so managers can prepare their queue. Use a platform randomizer or a physical draw at a pre-draft event.
Test the platform. Check: all managers can access the league; scoring and roster settings are correct; the draft room loads without errors; you know how to pause, resume, and override if needed.
Day of the Draft
Send reminders. 24-hour reminder: draft time, platform link, draft order, dues status. 1-hour reminder: brief nudge that it is coming.
Start on time. The single biggest draft day failure is starting late. If you say 7:00 PM, start at 7:00 PM. Set autopick rules for late arrivals rather than holding the whole league hostage.
Set a pick timer. A timer prevents the draft from dragging. When the timer expires, most platforms auto-pick from the manager’s queue — make sure managers know to set their queue before the draft.
Common Draft Day Problems
Manager no-show: Set them to auto-pick immediately by pick 2. Contact them on the side — if they are truly unable to draft, the team will auto-pick until they join. The draft proceeds regardless.
Platform crash: Take a screenshot of every pick made so far. Pause the draft. Contact platform support — most platforms have recovery tools. Pause for a maximum of 10 minutes, then resume as best you can.
Trade during the draft: Announce in advance that trades are prohibited during the draft. Trades open after the draft completes.
Manager wants to reverse a pick: Platform mistakes happen. Clear policy before the draft: reversal allowed within 30 seconds of the pick, commissioner discretion only. Do not reverse picks that turned out to be poor strategic decisions.
In-Person Draft Tips
Set the room: Print a cheat sheet with draft order visible to everyone; provide snacks and drinks (this is a social event); have a visible countdown timer on a shared screen; designate one screen for the platform draft board.
Read picks aloud: Call out each pick as it is made — “Team Name selects Ja’Marr Chase.” This creates energy and ensures everyone knows who was taken.
The announcement pause: Many leagues celebrate the first pick in each round with a brief pause before the manager selects. Creates draft day drama.
After the Draft
Post the draft results. Send a full draft results recap within 24 hours — who picked in each round, every team’s roster. A message from the commissioner adding personality (“Here is how everyone drafted — who is taking home the trophy this year?”) builds league culture.
Open the trade market. Announce that trades are open. The day after the draft is when the most active trading happens.
