Commissioner Inactive Team Policy: Deadlines, Lineups, and Replacements
An inactive manager isn’t just an annoyance — they actively harm competitive integrity. A locked lineup wins by default against someone who prepared all week. A team that ignores waivers distorts the market for everyone else. Handling this well is one of the core commissioner skills.
Graduated Response Checklist
Stage 1 — Direct Contact (Week 1 of inactivity)
- Message the manager directly — keep it brief and non-accusatory: “Hey [Name], noticed your lineup hasn’t been updated this week. Checking in to make sure everything’s okay. Let me know by [day/time] if you need anything.”
- Give them 24–48 hours to respond
- If they respond with a reason: work out a plan (set lineup for them temporarily, give deadline for next week)
Stage 2 — Commissioner Sets Lineup (Week 2, no response)
- If no response within 48 hours of Stage 1 message: set their lineup to a reasonable optimal based on public projections
- Do not set a suboptimal lineup intentionally — the goal is competitive integrity, not advantage for you or anyone else
- Announce to the league publicly: “[Manager]’s team is being managed by the commissioner this week while we try to reach them. Keeping lineups competitive for everyone.”
- Attempt contact again
Stage 3 — Replacement Manager (Week 3+, still inactive)
- Put it to a league vote: “We have an inactive team. Should we find a replacement manager?”
- Begin finding a replacement (ask managers if they know anyone, post to r/findaleague)
- Transfer the team to the new manager
- Explicitly notify the departing manager that they’ve been removed — don’t ghost them back
Redraft vs. Dynasty: Different Urgency Levels
Redraft: An inactive team mid-season is a temporary problem. The season ends in Week 15–16. Set lineups via commissioner until replacement is found. If the team is out of contention, commissioner-managed auto-lineups may be acceptable.
Act faster if: The team is competitive and their inactivity affects playoff seeding — someone’s getting an unfair advantage.
Dynasty: An abandoned dynasty roster is a serious long-term problem. An unmanaged roster can become a “sucker tree” — teams make lopsided deals knowing the team accepts anything. This directly harms competitive integrity for years.
Dynasty urgency thresholds:
- Week 1 unresponsive → immediate commissioner contact
- Week 2 unresponsive → begin orphan team process
- The orphan team process moves fast in dynasty — roster quality matters too much to leave it unmanaged long
When the Inactive Manager is a Friend
The hardest version. A friend going through a rough patch doesn’t deserve to be publicly called out.
Handle it privately:
- Reach out personally: “Hey, league is noticing your team’s been unmanaged. I wanted to check in before anyone else says anything.”
- Give them a dignified easy out: “If you need someone to take over your team, we can do that quietly — no big deal either way.”
- Set a private deadline: “If you want to stay active, let me know by [date]. If not, I’ll quietly transfer the team.”
The goal is to preserve both the friendship and the league’s integrity. Most friends will either re-engage or accept the graceful exit when approached this way.
Prevention (Easier Than Treatment)
At draft: “One rule we take seriously: set your lineup every week. If something comes up, message the group chat and I’ll help. Silent for two weeks = we find a replacement.”
Weekly group chat: Creates social accountability. People who might forget to set a lineup don’t forget when they’ve been active in the chat that week.
Entry fees: Paid leagues have significantly higher lineup completion rates than free leagues. Skin in the game is the most reliable inactivity prevention.
Constitution language: Specify in writing what “inactive” means and what the response protocol is before any season starts. If it’s in the constitution, you have clear authority to act — and no one can argue the process.
For the league constitution that gives you authority to act on inactivity, see: Commissioner: How to Write a Fantasy Football League Constitution. For managing orphan teams in dynasty specifically, see: Commissioner: How to Run a Dynasty League.
