Commissioner League Finance: Collecting Dues and Managing Money
Money makes people nervous.
Handling league finance poorly creates distrust. “Where did my entry fee go?” “Why is the prize pool unclear?” These questions fester.
Handle it professionally: collect dues, manage the pot, award prizes transparently.
Before the Season
Set entry fee: Decide on a fee per team.
- Standard: $50–$200 per team
- Your job: Collect this before the season starts
Communicate clearly: Email all managers.
- “Entry fee: $100 per team”
- “Due by: [Date]”
- “How to pay: [Venmo/PayPal/check]”
- “Prize pool: [X goes to 1st, Y to 2nd, Z to 3rd]”
Have a collection deadline: Don’t let dues drag on.
“Dues due by August 15. We draft August 20. If you haven’t paid, you’re not in the league.”
Collect in advance: Don’t wait until after the season to collect from a manager who’s now broke.
During the Season
Keep the pot safe: Store league money in a separate account or hold it yourself (don’t mix with personal money).
Track payments: Keep a spreadsheet.
- Manager names
- Amount owed
- Amount paid
- Date paid
- Payment method
If someone doesn’t pay: Follow up immediately.
- Week 2: “Hey, we haven’t received your $100 yet”
- Week 4: “Your team is still unpaid. If we don’t get it by [date], we’ll need to remove your team”
Don’t be a pushover. Enforce deadlines.
At Season End
Calculate prize pool:
- 10 teams × $100 = $1,000 total pot
- 1st place: $600
- 2nd place: $300
- 3rd place: $100
(Or whatever your league agreed on)
Award prizes: Pay winners immediately after playoffs end.
Keep records: Document everything.
- Dues collected
- Prizes awarded
- Dates paid
Transparency is Everything
Share the breakdown: At season start and season end, email all managers.
“League Finance Summary:
- 10 teams × $100 = $1,000
- 1st place (Champion): $600
- 2nd place: $300
- 3rd place: $100
- Commission (commissioner’s cut): $0 (optional: 5% for handling)
Dues collected: 10/10 teams paid“
Be honest: If you take a cut for running the league, say so upfront.
“Commissioner cut: 5% ($50) for managing the league, collecting dues, and handling finances.”
This is fair and transparent.
The Payoff
Professional league finance:
- Builds trust (managers know where their money goes)
- Prevents disputes (clear prize pool, documented payments)
- Makes you a reliable commissioner (you’re organized)
Sloppy league finance ruins leagues. Don’t be that commissioner.
