Commissioner Guide: How to Run a Smooth Draft Night

Draft night should feel effortless for your managers. Behind the scenes, you will have done significant work to make it feel that way.

Draft Night Commissioner Checklist

When Action Critical detail
3+ days before Verify platform settings (scoring, roster positions, draft type, rounds, auto-pick) Not 30 minutes before — if there’s a misconfiguration you need time to fix it
24+ hours before Share draft order with all managers Managers like knowing their position in advance so they can prepare
48 hours before First reminder with date, time (with timezone), platform link, any late rule changes Include the substitute plan for managers who can’t attend
2 hours before Second reminder with platform link, draft clock setting, scoring format State that you’ll be online early if anyone has technical questions
30 minutes before Log into the platform; confirm all managers have access Reach out directly to any manager who is offline 10 minutes before start
During draft Set and enforce the draft clock; do not extend for individual managers Keep the chat positive; redirect mid-draft complaints to “let’s finish the draft”
Within 30 min after Verify all rosters; send post-draft message Address any disputed picks within 24 hours

Pre-Draft Platform Verification

At least 3 days before the draft, log in as administrator and verify:

  • Scoring settings are correct (all point values match what was agreed)
  • Roster positions are set correctly (flex slots, TE premium, Superflex if applicable)
  • Draft type is set (snake or auction)
  • Number of rounds is correct
  • Draft order is set or randomization is ready
  • Auto-pick preferences are configured

Test the scoring: Manually score a hypothetical player’s performance to verify the settings before anything goes live.

Substitute plan: Identify in advance what happens if a manager cannot attend — auto-pick, a designated manager covering their picks, or a brief grace period. Communicate this plan in your pre-draft reminder.

During the Draft

The draft clock: Set it and enforce it. Most leagues use 60–90 seconds per pick. A 90-second clock for an 18-round, 12-team draft takes approximately 3.5 hours at full clock.

Do not extend the clock for individual managers. The draft clock is in the rules; if a manager is not ready, auto-pick handles it.

When auto-pick fires: Acknowledge briefly in chat (“Auto-pick for [name], next on the clock is [name]”) and keep moving. Do not apologize or offer do-overs.

Common technical problems:

Manager cannot connect: Suggest a different browser or the mobile app. Give a 1-minute grace period, then start the clock. Auto-pick will cover them if they remain offline.

Pick submitted twice (platform glitch): Most platforms have a rollback function in settings. Address it quickly — do not leave the draft paused while troubleshooting for more than 2 minutes.

Wrong player drafted: Log it in the chat (“X accidentally took Y instead of Z, will address post-draft”), keep drafting, and resolve afterward. Mid-draft corrections disrupt flow for everyone.

Keep the chat positive: If any manager starts complaining about settings, their position, or rules during the draft, redirect to “let’s finish the draft, happy to discuss after.”

After the Draft

Verify rosters (within 30 minutes):

  • Correct number of players at each position
  • No duplicate players
  • All managers with complete rosters (no-shows who auto-picked should still have a full team)

Post-draft message:

  • Congratulate everyone
  • Post the first waiver wire processing date and FAAB amounts
  • Confirm Week 1 schedule is set
  • Invite any questions about settings

Address disputed picks within 24 hours while they are fresh. Most platforms allow commissioner trades or team edits before the season officially starts.

Auction Draft Specific Notes

Set the budget clearly: Confirm the budget ($100, $200, or custom) on the platform and communicate in advance.

Pace management: Auctions can run long if managers take excessive time with nominations. Establish a nomination clock (usually 15–30 seconds to start bidding) and a minimum bidding increment ($1 minimum, no half-dollar bids).

The final picks: In auctions, the last few picks involve managers with minimal remaining budget ($1 picks). These go quickly — confirm the platform handles $1 minimum bids correctly.
