Scoring Format Decisions: PPR vs Standard, and Custom Scoring Rules

Scoring format is foundational.

PPR (1 point per reception) vs Standard (0 points per reception) changes player values dramatically. Choose one, lock it in your constitution, don’t change it mid-season.

The Formats

PPR (Points Per Reception):

  • 1 point per catch (in addition to yardage/TD points)
  • Inflates WR/TE value relative to RBs
  • Makes pass-catching backs (RBs with receiving volume) more valuable

Standard (0 PPR):

  • No points for catches, only yardage and TDs
  • RB value stays high (rushing volume matters more)
  • WR/TE value lower (depends on yards and TDs only)

0.5 PPR (Hybrid):

  • 0.5 points per catch (middle ground)
  • Balances RB/WR value
  • Most popular (ESPN default)

The Impact

Same WR, different formats:

WR stats: 60 yards, 5 catches, 1 TD

PPR: 6 (catches) + 6 (yards/10) + 6 (TD) = 18 points 0.5 PPR: 2.5 (catches) + 6 (yards) + 6 (TD) = 14.5 points Standard: 0 (catches) + 6 (yards) + 6 (TD) = 12 points

Difference: 6 points between PPR and Standard (significant)

The Choice

Pick PPR if:

  • You want WRs and pass-catching RBs to be more valuable
  • You like high-scoring games (more points per week)
  • You want to reward receiving volume

Pick Standard if:

  • You want RB rushing volume to matter more
  • You like lower-scoring games (less variance)
  • You prefer classic fantasy football

Pick 0.5 PPR if:

  • You want balance (RB and WR both matter)
  • You want moderate scoring (middle ground)
  • Most popular (good for new leagues)

The Locking-In

Document in your constitution:

“Scoring Format: 0.5 PPR

  • 0.5 points per reception
  • 4 points per passing TD (some leagues use 6 — pick one and write it down)
  • 6 points per rushing/receiving TD
  • 1 point per 25 passing yards
  • 1 point per 10 rushing/receiving yards“

Never change mid-season. It’s unfair (changes player values for managers who drafted around the old format).

Custom Scoring

Advanced options (only if experienced league):

  • TE Premium: 1 point per reception for TEs (vs 0.5 for other players)
  • IDP: Individual Defensive Players (DB, LB, DL positions)
  • Return Yards: Points for kickoff/punt return yards

Recommendation: Start with standard format. Add custom later if league wants it.

The Payoff

Clear scoring format:

  • Predictable (managers draft knowing point values)
  • Consistent (same rules every year)
  • Fair (no mid-season changes)
