Commissioner Troubleshooting: Solving Common League Problems

Problems happen. How you solve them determines league health.

The best troubleshooting process is written before the problem exists. If the issue involves rules, start from the dispute process protocol; if it involves manager conduct, connect it back to the constitution and apply the same standard to every team.

Platform Glitches

Problem: Scoring is wrong. A player’s points don’t match ESPN.

Solution:

  • Check official NFL stats (nfl.com)
  • Check ESPN’s stat correction email (they send them weekly)
  • If mismatch: contact ESPN or your platform
  • If correction is needed: manually update in your league settings

Prevention: Check stats every Monday morning. Catch errors early.

Problem: A manager’s roster is corrupt (duplicate player, illegal lineup)

Solution:

  • Screenshot the issue
  • Contact the manager: “Hey, your roster has Travis Etienne twice. Can you drop one?”
  • If manager won’t fix: manually remove the duplicate as commissioner
  • Document what happened

Prevention: Review rosters weekly. Catch issues before they spiral.

Missing Managers

Problem: A manager hasn’t set a lineup in 4 weeks. Are they still in?

Solution:

  • Email: “Haven’t seen activity from you. Are you still playing?”
  • Wait 48 hours for response
  • If no response: assume they’re out. Use auto-pick for their team (or remove them)
  • Replace with a new manager if needed

Prevention: Confirm interest after season ends. Know who’s returning before season starts.

Problem: A manager is unresponsive to all communications.

Solution:

  • Try email, text, phone (whatever contact info you have)
  • If still no response after 1 week: set their team to auto-pick and move on

Collusion Accusations

Problem: Manager A thinks Manager B and C colluded on a trade.

Solution:

  • Review the trade: Does it look lopsided?
  • Review the context: Is Team B tanking? Is Team C desperate?
  • Review the managers’ history: Are they friends? Do they frequently trade?
  • Make a call: “Based on [reasons], we’re approving/rejecting this trade”
  • Explain publicly: Keep it fair and transparent

Prevention: Clear collusion definition in league constitution. Enforce consistently.

Scoring Disputes

Problem: A player’s position changed mid-week. Should we count him as RB or WR?

Solution:

  • Check official NFL designation (nfl.com)
  • Go with whatever the official source says
  • Document the decision for next time

The ladder prevents overreaction. A missing lineup and a collusion accusation should not receive the same process, but both need timestamps, evidence, and a written conclusion.

Good troubleshooting keeps leagues alive.

Problems handled quickly = managers stay engaged.
