Maximizing championship probability while the window is open: (1) buy current production, sell future picks when in the window — during the competitive window, prioritize winning now; trade distant future picks to acquire current contributors who improve the starting lineup; the picks being traded will arrive when the team may no longer be competitive anyway; the opportunity cost of those picks in 2027 is lower than the championship opportunity cost of not improving the roster in 2025; (2) recognize the signals that the window is closing — the competitive window is closing when: (a) the elite veteran contributors begin showing statistical decline or injury frequency, (b) the bench depth is depleted from prior trades, (c) the pick capital is low for the next 2-3 drafts; when 2 of these 3 signals appear simultaneously, begin planning the transition rather than continuing to buy current production; (3) plan the rebuild entry point while still competitive — the best time to begin acquiring the next rebuild’s foundation assets is while the team is still competitive; teams that wait until the window has fully closed (all veterans in decline, roster barren) begin the rebuild from a weak position; teams that begin acquiring future assets in the final year of a competitive window (accepting some reduction in current competitiveness) enter the rebuild with a head start.
