Dynasty League Contraction: How to Handle Teams Dropping Out of Your Dynasty League

The worst outcome: a poorly managed orphan team that never picks up free agents, never sets lineups, and beats strong teams through schedule luck while losing to weak teams unfairly. A plan for handling dropouts protects league competitive integrity.

Dynasty Contraction Quick Reference

Situation Best response Process Mistake to avoid
Team drops mid-season with strong roster Recruit a replacement owner immediately Post to dynasty communities (Sleeper Discord, Reddit r/DynastyFF); price the buyout appropriately for a contending team Waiting weeks to address a mid-season dropout — every week a ghost team sets suboptimal lineups damages competitive integrity
Team drops in the off-season with weak roster Dispersal draft — redistribute talent and contract the league All players on the contracted team go into a pool; surviving teams draft in reverse standings order Contracting when the orphan team has legitimate talent that could attract a new owner — always try replacement first
Team drops mid-season with weak roster Assign a temporary commissioner-managed lineup; recruit replacement Commissioner sets the best lineup using the worst-team-available approach; recruit simultaneously Letting the orphan team auto-set lineups — platforms auto-pick based on projections, not role-adjusted starters; manual management is cleaner
Dispersal draft: determining rounds One round per roster spot on the contracted team, OR a fixed number of rounds with remaining players becoming free agents Announce the round count before the draft begins Running an open-ended dispersal draft without announcing how many rounds — managers need to know when free agents become available to plan their picks
Dispersal draft: setting pick order Worst team in last season’s standings gets pick 1 — reverse-standings order Verify the standings order and publish before the draft Giving contenders early picks in the dispersal draft — this compounds existing competitive imbalances in favor of teams that are already strong
Preventing future dropouts Require dues payment and an off-season commitment survey; ask each owner to confirm in January/February for the upcoming season Annual off-season commitment check — whoever does not respond in 2 weeks is replaced proactively Waiting until April to discover you have dropouts — a February check gives 3–4 months to recruit replacements before the draft season

Option 1: Recruit a Replacement Owner

Best for: leagues with strong community value in the departed team’s roster. Post the orphan team to dynasty communities (Sleeper Discord, Reddit r/DynastyFF, Twitter/X dynasty groups). Many managers actively look for orphan teams, especially ones with young talent.

Price the orphan appropriately: a rebuilding team may be free or low-cost, while a team with a legitimate contention window may command a buyout.

Option 2: Contract the League

Best for: leagues that are already too large or where the orphan team has a weak roster. Removing the team requires distributing the roster into a dispersal draft. All players on the contracted team go into a pool — surviving teams draft from the pool in reverse standings order (the worst teams get first picks).

How to Run a Dispersal Draft

Determine draft rounds. Decide in advance how many rounds the dispersal draft will run. Common approaches: one round per roster spot on the contracted team, or a set number of rounds with remaining players becoming free agents.

Set draft order. Worst team in standings (last season) gets pick 1. This prevents contenders from disproportionately benefiting from the contracted team’s talent.

When pricing an orphan buyout or seeding a dispersal draft, use the Dynasty Trade Calculator to value the roster objectively — a hard number on the team’s players and picks lets you set a fair buyout for a recruit or rank dispersal-pool talent transparently rather than by guesswork.
