Why QB prospect evaluation is the highest-stakes dynasty decision: the difference between owning the franchise QB and a career backup in dynasty is enormous. The framework: (1) accuracy and ball placement under pressure — the college QB who is accurate when rushed and under duress is demonstrating the most important NFL-readiness skill; accuracy in clean pockets is common; accuracy under pressure is rare and more predictive; check completion percentage in play-action and scramble-extension situations versus clean pockets; (2) anticipatory throwing — the QB who throws receivers open (throws to the spot before the receiver gets there) is operating at an NFL level; the QB who throws only to open receivers (reactive throwing) has a lower NFL production ceiling; (3) decision-making in compressed windows — NFL QB decision cycles are 2–3 seconds; the college QB who successfully processes multi-level reads in compressed windows is demonstrating processing speed that translates; the one-read QB who stares down his primary target is a significant projection risk; (4) arm strength at multiple distances — the elite dynasty QB needs the ability to make all arm-strength throws (outside the numbers, back shoulder, seam routes with a safety over the top); check the range of arm angles and velocities the prospect uses in college, not just the best-case throws in a highlight reel.
The QB prospect red flags:
The risks: (1) system-schemed accuracy — some college QBs produce in extreme run-pass option (RPO) schemes or mesh-point reads that are entirely predefined before the snap; their completion rate in these systems does not predict success in NFL-level progressive reads; evaluate their performance in non-RPO passing situations; (2) physical development versus refinement — an athletically extraordinary QB who has not yet refined his throwing mechanics, pre-snap reads, and route-to-coverage matching is a higher-risk prospect than one who may have less physical ceiling but already operates with NFL-level cognitive accuracy; (3) one-year wonder production — a QB who produced one elite season but was less impressive in prior years may have benefited from a new coordinator or scheme that will not follow him to the NFL; (4) footwork under duress — bad footwork habits in college (happy feet, stepping backward instead of into throws, inconsistent base under pressure) often persist in the NFL under greater defensive pressure; check the prospect’s footwork specifically in 3rd-and-long passing situations.
How to act on QB prospect evaluation:
The execution: (1) buy dynasty QB prospects before the draft confirmation (when their NFL landing spot becomes known); after confirmation of a starting opportunity on a good team, the market moves quickly; (2) the best QB prospect buy is a player who: has a strong evaluator grade, is projected to go in the 2nd–3rd round of the NFL draft (lower cost as a dynasty acquisition), and lands in a starting role within year 1–2; (3) connect QB prospect evaluation to TE prospect profiles sequencing — when you identify a strong QB prospect, their receiving corp’s dynasty value rises too; the franchise QB elevates every skill position player on the same team; (4) pair QB evaluation with player development tracking — a young QB who shows development signals (rising completion percentage, better pre-snap reads in year 2 film) is on the right trajectory even if their statistics are not yet elite.
