Prioritize recency. For a contending team, proven veterans produce NOW — this season. Future picks might be a bust, might convey in years 3–5 when your window may be closed, and require development time after acquisition. Pay up for veterans when you are in a championship window.
Avoid giving multiple premium picks. Even in a championship window, surrendering two first-round picks for one player requires that player to produce elite value for multiple seasons to justify the cost. One-for-one first-round-for-player swaps are more manageable than multi-pick packages.
Rebuilder Perspective in Picks-for-Players Trades
Buy picks at a discount when possible. Contending managers sometimes over-value immediate production and sell their future picks too cheaply. Rebuilders should always look for picks at below-market value — a first-round pick that costs you a WR3 is a strong return.
