How Efficiency Metrics Predict Dynasty Value
Why efficiency matters more than volume in dynasty. In dynasty, an RB’s volume is largely determined by their team and coaching staff decisions — a team that commits to their RB1 gives them volume; a team that splits the backfield reduces everyone’s volume. Efficiency is more controllable: an RB who forces missed tackles, gains yards after contact, and produces above expectation given blocking quality will maintain value across team changes because their skills transfer. An RB whose production relies entirely on dominant offensive line blocking (high YPC on a team with excellent line grades, average yards after contact, few missed tackles forced) may significantly underperform if they are traded to a team with weaker blocking.
Volume vs efficiency in dynasty trade decisions. When evaluating dynasty trades involving RBs, use efficiency to distinguish between: (1) RBs who are worth their volume — their efficiency supports the production, and they would produce well with different volume allocations; and (2) RBs who are inflated by their volume — their production is volume-dependent, and any reduction in carries or change in team situation would reveal their average efficiency. Limitations of Efficiency Metrics
What efficiency metrics cannot predict. RB efficiency metrics have limits: (1) they cannot account for scheme change — an RB who is efficient in a zone-run scheme may not translate equally to a gap-run scheme that requires different skills; (2) they cannot predict injury — an RB who has been used heavily may show strong current efficiency but is at elevated injury risk from high usage over years; and (3) small sample sizes create noise — a rookie RB’s efficiency in their first 8 games may not reflect their true efficiency level as they adjust to NFL speed and schemes.
