Speed Thresholds That Matter in Dynasty
Elite speed (sub-4.40 40-time). Receivers who run under 4.40 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the NFL combine can threaten NFL defenses vertically — their straight-line speed creates single-coverage problems that defenses have to account for, which in turn opens opportunities for shorter routes. Elite speed receivers who also run quality routes are the most dangerous dynasty WR profile because they threaten all three levels of the field.
Adequate speed (4.40–4.55 range). The 4.40–4.55 range covers most NFL starting WRs — adequate speed to run every route on the route tree without being a pure liability against press coverage. Receivers in this range succeed or fail based on technique, route running, hands, and football IQ rather than speed. Dynasty managers should not discount receivers in this range solely on speed — the route-running and hands variables matter more.
Concerning speed (above 4.60). Receivers who run above 4.60 are challenged to create separation at the NFL level through speed alone. They can still succeed if they win at the top of routes through excellent body control and hand work, but they need to compensate for the speed deficit in other measurable ways.
