Evaluating Dynasty League Trade Value: The Master Framework for Dynasty Trading Decisions

Dynasty trading is complex. You’re not trading players for one season. You’re trading them for potentially 3-10 years. A trade that’s good for this year might be terrible for next year. A trade that’s bad for this year might be amazing for the future.

The difference between redraft and dynasty trade value is stark. In redraft, a 30-year-old RB is worthless (2-3 year shelf life). In dynasty, that same RB might be a solid player for 2-3 more years at diminished value.

Understanding dynasty trade value is the foundation of dynasty success.


Redraft vs. Dynasty Value

Redraft value formula: Projected season production × 1

Dynasty value formula: Projected season production × Multi-year weight

Example: 30-year-old RB in redraft:

  • Year 1 projection: 1000 rushing yards, 8 TDs = RB2 value
  • Redraft value: RB2 (that’s all you get)

Same RB in dynasty:

  • Year 1: RB2 value
  • Year 2: RB3 value (age decline)
  • Year 3: RB4 value (age decline) or retired
  • Dynasty value: RB2 + (RB3 × 0.75) + (RB4 × 0.5) = elevated value across 3 years

The dynasty value is higher because you’re extracting value over multiple years, even if it declines.


The Multi-Year Value Framework

To calculate dynasty value:

Step 1 - Estimate production for years 1-N: Year 1: RB1 (1200 yards, 10 TDs) Year 2: RB2 (1000 yards, 8 TDs) Year 3: RB3 (800 yards, 6 TDs) Year 4: RB4 (600 yards, 4 TDs) Year 5: Retired or minimal

Step 2 - Discount future years: Dynasty leagues should discount future years (typically 20-30% per year) because future is uncertain.

Year 1 value: RB1 (100%) Year 2 value: RB2 value × 75% (discount for uncertainty) Year 3 value: RB3 value × 60% (greater uncertainty) Year 4+ value: Minimal (very uncertain)

Step 3 - Sum the multi-year value: Dynasty trade value = Year 1 value + (Year 2 × 0.75) + (Year 3 × 0.60)


Age and Decline Curves

Different positions decline at different rates:

QB: Decline slow. Tom Brady played into his 40s. RB: Decline fast. By 28-30, most RBs are declining. WR: Decline slow-to-medium. 30+ WRs can still produce. TE: Decline slow. Some TEs are elite into late 30s.

Understanding your position’s decline curve is critical.


Young Players and Dynasty Premiums

Young, unproven players carry a premium in dynasty because of ceiling potential.

Example: 22-year-old RB rookie:

  • Year 1: Unknown (could be RB1 or RB4)
  • Year 2-5: Potentially peak years (RB1-RB2)
  • Year 6-8: Sustainable elite/good production

Vs. 26-year-old proven RB1:

  • Year 1-3: Sustained RB1
  • Year 4-5: RB2-RB3
  • Year 6+: Decline or done

The 22-year-old’s unknown year 1 is offset by years 2-5 upside. That’s the dynasty premium.


Calculating Fair Dynasty Trades

To evaluate a trade:

Step 1 - Calculate multi-year value for each side Step 2 - Compare: Is the value roughly equal over 3-5 years? Step 3 - Evaluate timeline: Does this trade align with your competitive window?

Example trade: You give RB1 (26-year-old), get RB2 (22-year-old) + pick

3-year value: Your side: RB1 for 3 years, then decline Receiving side: RB2 young years 1-3, then peak years 4-5+

This trade might be fair if both teams’ timelines align.


The Dynasty Trade Decision Tree

When evaluating a dynasty trade:

Q1: Does this trade improve my immediate competitive window (year 1-2)?

  • Yes → Continue
  • No → Risky trade

Q2: Does this trade improve my long-term window (year 3-5)?

  • Yes → Excellent trade
  • No → Short-term only

Q3: Am I the RB1 team (need to trade down for depth) or rebuilding (need assets)?

  • RB1 team → Trading RB1 for depth is good
  • Rebuilding → Acquiring young RB for win-now is bad

If all three check out, the trade is likely dynasty-sound.
