Dynasty Value Plan: How To Assign a Job to Every Asset

A 30-man dynasty roster you can’t explain is a roster you’re mismanaging. The fix is to give every single asset an explicit job label and then check that your labels actually add up to a coherent team — a contender shouldn’t be sitting on eight “develop and hold” rookies, and a rebuilder shouldn’t be rostering four aging “win now” starters bleeding value every week. A value plan turns a pile of names into a roster with a stated purpose behind each spot.

TL;DR: Tag every player and pick with one of five jobs — cornerstone, win-now piece, developmental hold, sell candidate, or roster clog — and if the tags don’t match your competitive window, the mismatched assets are your trade list.

Five labels cover almost any dynasty asset, and each one implies a specific action.

Job label What qualifies Implied action Danger sign
Cornerstone Young, elite, positional anchor Untouchable; build around Trading one for “value”
Win-now piece Productive but aging or one-year Start now, sell before the cliff Holding past peak
Developmental hold Young upside, not yet producing Roster and wait, 1–2 years Holding too many at once
Sell candidate Value exceeds his role on your team Shop actively this window Getting attached
Roster clog No path to relevance for you Drop or throw into a package Blocking a waiver dart

Worked Example: The Contender Doing a Roster Census

You’re contending, so you label all 30 assets. It comes out to 3 cornerstones, 4 win-now pieces — and nine developmental holds plus two clogs. That’s a rebuilder’s shape stapled onto a contender’s front. The plan writes itself: package three of the developmental holds and both clogs to a rebuilding rival for one more win-now WR. You’re not “buying a player,” you’re converting future-labeled assets you don’t have time to wait on into the window you’re actually in.

Common mistake: Labeling by talent instead of by role on your team. A great young RB is a cornerstone on a rebuild but a sell candidate on a contender who can cash him for a proven piece. The same player gets different jobs on different rosters.

Takeaway: once a month, tag every asset and read the distribution as a whole. When the labels don’t match your window, the odd ones out aren’t clutter — they’re your next trades.
