How to Analyze Fantasy Football Player Stats: What Numbers Actually Matter

Every week, your fantasy players produce a game log: rushing yards, receiving yards, targets, touchdowns, receptions. The score column shows you the result. The stats underneath tell you whether that result was repeatable.

Most Important Stats by Position

QB Stats

Passing attempts: Volume foundation — a QB attempting 35 passes per game has more TD opportunity than one attempting 20. Watch for game script-driven changes (blowout → running clock → fewer attempts).

Yards per attempt: Efficiency and depth of targets. 8.0+ yards per attempt signals a team throwing downfield. Under 6.5 is dump-off heavy.

Rushing yards and TDs: For running QBs, rushing adds a meaningful floor. Track rushing attempts — this adds scoring independent of the passing game.

RB Stats

Carries per game: More carries = more opportunity = more fantasy points. 15+ is a workhorse. Under 8 is a limited role.

Yards per carry (YPC): Efficiency marker — but heavily influenced by offensive line quality. Don’t penalize a good RB for a bad OL or credit a mediocre RB behind an elite one.

Targets per game: Pass-catching RBs have higher ceilings in PPR formats. 4–6 targets per game = three-down back. Under 2 = run-only, limited PPR value.

Red zone carries: Who gets carries inside the 5 yard line is who scores TDs. Red zone usage is one of the strongest predictors of rushing TD rate.

Snap percentage: Under 50% suggests a committee or limited trust. 70%+ is a clear starter.

WR Stats

Targets per game: The single most important WR stat. 8+ is WR1 level. 4–5 is WR2/3. Below 4 is depth.

Target share: What percentage of team targets does the WR get? 20%+ is elite. 12–15% is solid. Under 10% is a depth player.

Catch rate: Reliability measure. 75%+ is elite. Under 60% sustained suggests inconsistency — drops, difficult coverage schemes, or being used in contested situations.

Yards after catch (YAC): WRs who create after the catch maintain production even when targets are average. High YAC indicates explosive potential from short-area routes.

TE Stats

Targets per game: 6+ is elite. 3–4 is functional. Under 2 is background noise.

Red zone usage: Like RBs, TE red zone targets predict touchdowns reliably. A TE with 2+ red zone targets per game has consistent TD potential.


Misleading Stats to Discount

Touchdown totals: TDs are real but volatile. A WR who scores 3 TDs in one game and zero for 6 weeks hasn’t changed — the opportunity was concentrated. Check: was the TD from an established red zone role, or a fluke long play?

Big-play yardage totals: An RB who ran for 200 yards including a 75-yard breakaway is not a 200-yard rusher. Check their per-carry average excluding the long run — if it’s 3.1, the “200-yard game” is much less meaningful.

Garbage time stats: Teams losing by 20+ points in the 4th quarter throw heavily to catch up. This inflates receiving stats for players on losing teams. Check what the player did in the first three quarters when the game was competitive.


Sustainable vs. Unsustainable Performance

Sustainable:

  • Consistent targets/carries across all game scripts (close games, wins, losses)
  • Stats that match the player’s role (WR1 getting WR1 targets, not a one-week spike)
  • Touchdowns coming from established red zone usage

Unsustainable:

  • Big week driven entirely by a long TD or TD concentration
  • Stats concentrated in garbage time
  • Role/usage that doesn’t match their actual depth chart standing

The Snap Count Check

For any player whose production is questionable, check their snap count (available on FantasyPros, PFF, or the team’s official site):

  • High snap count + low production: Bad game despite opportunity — usually hold
  • Low snap count + low production: Role has likely changed — investigate why
  • High snap count + high production: Repeatable if the role holds

Snap count is the x-ray of fantasy production — it shows the opportunity even when the box score is blank.
