How to Read a Fantasy Football Box Score and Understand Your Score

Every fantasy score is built from individual player stats. Understanding which stats generate points — and why a player scored more or less than projected — makes you a more accurate start/sit decision-maker and trade evaluator.

Scoring Formulas Quick Reference

Rushing:

  • Rushing yards: 0.1 pts per yard (10 yards = 1 point)
  • Rushing TD: 6 points

Receiving:

  • Receiving yards: 0.1 pts per yard
  • Receptions: 0 pts (standard), 0.5 pts (half-PPR), 1.0 pt (full PPR)
  • Receiving TD: 6 points

Passing:

  • Passing yards: 0.04 pts per yard (25 yards = 1 point)
  • Passing TD: 4 points (standard) or 6 points (some leagues)
  • Interception: −2 points

Bonuses (leagues that use them):

  • 100+ rushing or receiving yards: +3 points
  • 300+ passing yards: +3 points
  • 2-point conversion: 2 points (rusher, receiver, or QB)

Example — WR with 7 catches, 83 yards, 1 TD (1.0 PPR):

  • 7 × 1.0 = 7.0
  • 83 × 0.1 = 8.3
  • 1 TD × 6 = 6.0
  • Total: 21.3 fantasy points

Same player in 0.5 PPR: 17.8 points. Same player in standard: 14.3 points. Format changes the same performance by up to 7 points.

Why Your Player Underperformed: Diagnostic Tree

My player was projected at [X] points but scored significantly less. Why?

Did he play the full game?
NO (left early, DNP) → Injury or healthy scratch. Check injury report.
  YES → Continue.

Did he have fewer touches/targets than his season average?
YES → Was it a game script issue?
Was his team a 7+ point favorite in a blowout win?
YES → Positive game script: team ran clock instead of passing.
RBs get more carries but WRs/TEs see fewer targets.
Was his team a 7+ point underdog in a blowout loss?
YES → Negative game script: carries suppressed for RBs.
WRs may have had more targets (silver lining).
Did a teammate get injured and steal his role?
YES → Depth chart shift. Check if it's temporary or permanent.
NO (touches/targets were normal) → Continue.

Did he have a typical number of opportunities but low efficiency?
Did he fail to score a touchdown?
YES → Many projected points come from touchdown probability.
A WR with 8 targets and 0 TDs often scores 6–10 pts instead of 16+.
Touchdowns are variable week-to-week. Hold unless the role changed.
Did he have short average yards per catch/carry?
YES → Matchup or scheme: short routes, stacked box, or conservative play-calling.
Evaluate if this is a recurring scheme issue or a one-week anomaly.

Did he fumble or throw an interception?
YES → Check your league's fumble penalty (typically −2 pts).
A fumble turns an 11-point game into a 9-point game.

Why Your Player Overperformed

Touchdowns: The single biggest driver of over-performance. A projected 12-point WR who catches a receiving TD scores 18+ immediately. Touchdowns are inherently variable — a boom week from a low-target WR often means one lucky red zone opportunity.

Above-normal volume: A WR who typically sees 7 targets gets 13 when a teammate gets injured. This is opportunity that may or may not repeat — check if it reflects a permanent role change.

Long plays: A single 50-yard reception adds 5 points. Same 5 catches in 10-yard increments = 5 points. One big play changes the score dramatically.

Bonus thresholds: In leagues with yardage bonuses, reaching 100 rush or receiving yards adds +3. A player at 98 yards who hits 102 vs. one who finishes at 97 is worth 3 extra points.

Reading Your Platform Box Score

Platforms show a table like this:

Player POS FPTS Stats
Lamar Jackson QB 38.2 294 pass yds, 2 TD, 0 INT, 76 rush yds, 2 rush TD

Verify manually:

  • 294 × 0.04 = 11.76
  • 2 passing TDs × 4 = 8.0
  • 0 INT × −2 = 0
  • 76 rush yards × 0.1 = 7.6
  • 2 rush TDs × 6 = 12.0
  • Calculated total: 39.36 — discrepancy from 38.2 would be explained by league-specific bonuses or deductions

If your score doesn’t match your calculation, check: fumbles, 2-point conversions, and any bonus thresholds in your league’s specific scoring settings.
