Expected Fantasy Points (xFP): What It Means and How to Use It

A wide receiver scores 24 fantasy points — but 14 of those points came from a single 70-yard touchdown. Did they “deserve” those 24 points? Expected fantasy points (xFP) helps you answer that — and make better decisions about whether to start, trade, or bench the player next week.

Key caveat: One week of data is noisy. Look for sustained 3–5 week trends before making major decisions based on xFP gaps.


What xFP Measures

xFP is a statistical model that estimates how many fantasy points a player should have scored based on:

  • Their target count and location (deep vs. short routes, air yards)
  • Their carry count and typical carry value
  • Their red zone opportunity count
  • League-average scoring probability for each opportunity type

Example: A WR had 6 targets — 2 short, 2 intermediate, 1 deep, 1 red zone. Based on historical catch rates and expected yardage for those target types, the model estimates those 6 targets should produce ~11.5 fantasy points. If they actually scored 22 (deep TD), they outperformed xFP. If they scored 5 (drops, bad route coverage), they underperformed.


Why Touchdowns Create the Biggest xFP Gaps

Touchdowns are the most point-dense fantasy event — and the least predictable:

  • A rushing TD = 6 points
  • A receiving TD = 6 points
  • A passing TD = 4–6 points

A back who scored 3 rushing TDs on 5 carries with 18 yards looks elite. Those same 5 carries next week produce far fewer points if the TDs don’t come. xFP corrects for this by weighting each play by historical probability — not the actual all-or-nothing outcome.


Using xFP for Trade and Waiver Decisions

Buy-low signal: A player with a high xFP but low actual points for 3–4 consecutive weeks is generating real opportunity (targets, carries, red zone looks) that hasn’t converted to points. Their role hasn’t changed; the results are lagging. This is often a buy.

Sell-high signal: A player with low xFP but high actual points — especially if the outperformance is TD-driven — is a candidate to sell. Their production was built on variance that’s unlikely to repeat at the same rate.

Evaluate the reason before acting:

  • Is the underperformer dropping balls? That’s a skill issue, not variance — xFP may be overvaluing them.
  • Was the outperformer in a legitimately high-scoring game environment? TD probability was genuinely elevated — less adjustment needed.

Where to Find xFP Data

FantasyPros: Advanced receiving stats include expected point metrics where available. PlayerProfiler: Tracks opportunity metrics including xFP approximations. PFF: Their fantasy projection models incorporate expected point frameworks.

Alternative approach: Track the components directly — targets, air yards, red zone opportunities — using FantasyPros or Pro Football Reference. The combination tells the same story as xFP without requiring a specific stat.


Limitations of xFP

The model assumes average players: Elite players sustainably outperform average catch rates and touchdown probability. Don’t overcorrect from a player like Travis Kelce just because their actual points exceeded their xFP — sustained outperformance at elite level is a real phenomenon, not always noise.

One week is noisy: A single-week deviation from xFP is nearly meaningless. Use 3–5 week trends.

Red zone variance is high: Near-goal-line plays are inherently uncertain — TD vs. no TD on similar situations. xFP in red zone scenarios has wider error bars than open-field metrics.
